Default Power antenna grind

Just replaced a noisy power antenna, when the mast is fully retracted the motor continues to run and makes a loud grinding noise???

Did you get all of the old plastic parts out?

You may have to fully disassemble and rebuild.

Default Power antenna grind

Thanks Salim, it's a new motor so would "assume" no broken threading in unit. Going to try to re-thread, maybe teeth in backwards? If not will have to invest in a garage doing the work. Have the old motor that made a lot more of the same noise, I'll take it apart to see if I can figure it out. If I figure the problem I will post, thought there would be others that had the same issues, I feel soooo lonely!

Just to set the expectation s right ... the antenna motor is not whisper quiet. I would worry only if the noise is different from before.

Dont worry we have your back here at CL .. and a belated welcome.

Default RX 300 power antenna grind

Thank you again Salimshah, The motor itself is really quiet, the problem would seem that something does not recognize that the mast is completely down and the motor continues to run for just under 10 seconds. The grinding sound is the plastic teeth of the motor continuing to run past the teeth of the thread that can not retract any farther. Believe me it is quite loud. If I ignore it the motor, teeth or my sanity will give out. What really bugs me is it has to be something simple, you know an easy fix. My next stop is my favorite garage in town, $$$$$. Anyway thank you again, appreciate you responding, we'll get this figured out and I'll post the results.

Smile RX 300 power antenna grind

Summing up my adventure, purchased RX300 with 167,000 miles, Great Car! Existing radio antenna motor made a loud grinding noise during motor operation, ordered new motor and mast from PartsGeeks as a "RX300 Antenna W0133-1740786 Genuine", cost $214.73. Motor with mast arrived quickly without special shipping. Parts came in a Toyota marked box and was said to be an Genuine Toyota part. Thanks to viewing "How To's" on YouTube self installation went smoothly. However, new motor ran 7 - 8 seconds beyond the mast had fully retracting once again making a loud grinding noise (plastic motor gear running over plastic antenna thread). Took Lexus to my go to place for my Toyota Tacoma, a local automotive garage. They felt the motor was defective so with my blessings they ordered a motor from their source which cost $344.18, labor not included. Their part is as follows, Description: MO ANT ASSY, Part No.: 863000W030, Toyota Genuine Parts: 23L4, Made in Mexico. Works flawlessly! They said the previous installation (myself) looked good, just a defective part. I did take the antenna motor apart that was in the vehicle when I purchased it and it appeared to be well used but not 13 to 14 years old. There wasn't any threading from an old mast so I would suspect it too was a defective part.
Next is returning the defective motor to PartsGeek, I will loose shipping costs but oh well. Overall I'm happy with with their promptness just think there are some less than desirable parts floating around out there. Once again thank you Salimshah and hope this information is helpful.

Thanks for the update. That's one expensive antenna. I'm lucky, still on my original.
These days I'm usually listening to streaming media over bluetooth though.

My antenna's nylon cable broke after 10 years. Pulled out antenna, cut the cable and stuck it back in. Then unplugged the motor. Works fine now, I just leave the antenna halfway up and reception is still good. Could've got a replacement mast with cable for $20 off ebay, but since radio is always on anyways, I just left it as is and saved the $$.

Guess I'm into gadgets, if it's supposed to go up and down then it should go up and down and like a bad child seen but not heard! Personality flaw I'm sure. Next project is to update the navigation system, wife needs it. New windshield too, looks like it had been driven through the desert during a sand storm, all kinds of little sparkles when the sun is low. Thanks all!

My 01 is making some noise. I am going to clean it and put some WD 40 and see if it quiets it.

We use it for the bluetooth transmitter

I humbly think that WD40 is misused many times. It is a great product but not intended to be a lubricant. Use it to clean, but hen wipe down and use proper lubricant (grease). Use the grease sparingly as it will attract grime and dirt.

Noise is usually from the belt teeth/gear inside the antenna. You probably have a broken belt or a belt that's slid off the gear.
