Welcome to Club Lexus.
Ignition switch is both mechanical and electrical (contacts). WD40* for sure would help in the mechanical operation and might help with the contacts.
Does the switch move from one position to the other smoothly? If not then you have a mechanical problem, If it operates fine but you dont get the electrical to operate then it has electrical (contact) problem.
Usually the ignition switch problems get worse with time. I would suggest replacing it, to prevent inconvenience or being stranded.
* Proper lubricant for hingers and keys is dry lubricant (graphite) as it does not attract dust. Grease, oil. WD40 attract dirt and over time you get grime.
Unfortunately, graphite has conduction properties, and it should not be sprayed into the switch.
The proper thing to use would be contact cleaner. They again have a bad side affect that they strip the light lubrication needed to operate the mechanical action.
Find a TV repair shop and see if they have one of the old cans to clean old TV channel selectors. If you use it make sure you catch the drip (as it strip the color of the molding/carpet). If not just use electronic parts cleaner and then spray your key with graphite, tap both sides of the key on rag to take off the excess and insert and remove key a few times. Then clean your key ... you may need to do that for a few times and make sure you carry a pouch for the key to prevent staining of your clothes from the graphite on the key.
