I popped off the blank and I'm considering putting a USB or iPod connection there. Anyone do similar?

If you plan to use the same blank, keep in mind that any pull and it will come out. It can take lot of push.

Yes, I've done that. I didn't remove the blank though, I just drilled a hole in it and inserted a USB dash mount through it. On the backside I used zip-ties and superglue to keep the blank in place so it will not come out when unplugging a USB cable.
