2003 lexus rx300 muffler replacement part
Its giving a weird hum/roar noise when idle or after acceleration. Muffler shop (reliable) checked it and said the Muffler is gone bad inside. The noise comes after stepping off the gas. Suggested to get the oem part and not the after market part and would charge 75 to replace.
Toyota dealer said the part number is 17440-20150 for the Muffler and costs $652 and a $35 washer. Total is 750 w taxes.
Amazon shows 498 for that part number. I searched with that part number in this forum and didn't get any results.
RX has 170k miles in it. hoping to get expert advice here. Thank you.

you have lots of options, a worthwhile muffler shop should be able to mount a universal muffler of your choice. You can get a used oem muffler and install yourself , buy a new aftermarket rx300 specific muffler, or buy new OEM from a dealer.
The biggest difference will be your exhaust tone if you go aftermarket. The muffler section is held only by 2 nuts/bolts and hung on rubber hangers closer to exhaust tip. Very manageable for a DIY if you choose.
FWIW, there is a used RX300 oem muffler on ebay 120 shipped.

If it's truly just the muffler, it's a very easy fix. Could DIY with a socket wrench and a sawzall.

OEM is 500 on Amazon. Way expensive. I can try doing it myself. I came across some threads suggesting to look at Lexmex threads that did upgrades to exhaust system. Any comments on that? I am guessing, one has to change more than just the muffler.
