Default 01 RX w 38K miles steering wheel noise

Hi everyone

I just bought this car and I notice there is a clicking noise
coming from the steering wheel area whenever I turn the wheel
Left and right

It does not sound like the creaking noise I know the RX is known for

The dealer is sayng it is a steering column Issue and I can replace it if I want
My service advisor tells me it is not a safety issue

Has anyone had this " clicking " noise ? Anyone replace the entire
Steering column ? The dealer want $1400 and I am thinking of passing

Hi car guy

My understanding is if is the spiral cable , it usually means you have no horn , the electrical including most light controls would also be out

I don't have that issue other than the " clicking " when I turn left or turn right with the steering wheel

I did lube the floor joint though when it was creaking and that stopped but now the clicking started

The spiral cable will make clicking sounds without any electrical issues.

One needs to narrow down the source of sound ... quoting another member ,,, "use your ear *****". For a few $$, you can get a mechanics stethoscope and trace the source based on the intensity of the sound. Other than ears, you can touch and feel the click and at times visually see the jerky movement.

Please narrow it down to: Steering wheel, floor, engine compartment (steering pump, rack), wheel links.

Only then we can speculate more accurately.

Tx guys

I might bring it to another mechanic for a second opinion

You would think the Lexus mechanic would know considering how much they get paid

The diagnosis from them is the lower shaft and the intermediate joints are getting worn

Ah, the o'l click, I took off that access cap on the side of the steering wheel and sprayed that silicone lubricant in there, turned the wheel back and forth, even sprayed on between the steering wheel, did it for about 15 minutes and it was gone, did this about a year and a half ago and still no noise. (Be generous with the silicone lubricant, spray every 2-3 minutes)

You really won't hit the airbag area, once you open it you can see where you are spraying, mine had a tiny straw with it too.

Is it only audible when turning the steering?

I have a steering wheel noise too. Mine sounds like metal scraping lightly against plastic. It also makes a secondary noise that sounds like rubber or plastic rubbing against glass or a smooth surface, kind of a like a squeak.

I doesn't always make this sound but often does. I'm also used to it now so I don't notice it.

does it sound like a squeak? My 01 was doing that, theres a boot looking thing by your pedals, its rubbing on that. I never cared to fix it, i heard I was suppose to spray some lube on it.
