necessity of changing time belt at 180000 miles
Hi all, My RX300 is approaching 180k miles. It has been changed timing belt and water pump at 90k service. According to recommendation, changing timing belt and water pump should be performed again. I would like to know, how long can I hold on this service? I have heard many times that this service is not necessary, as current timing belt longevity is much longer than 90k miles.
I personally would like to drive the car for another 50k miles
Thanks,

There are too many factors that could affect the timing belt components that is why the recommendation is at 90k miles. Belt stretch, tensioner position, ilder pulley bearings...all can fail and leave your valvetrain an expensive wreck in the event of a failure.
IMO, i wouldn't go 10k past the recommendation. 50k is 55% longer than the factory recommendation which is too risky to me.

If you change the belt as recommended, you SHOULD make it another 50K miles; while if you don't, you MIGHT make it another 50K miles.
IF your belt breaks, you'll be selling the car in parts; if it doesn't, you'll use the car as a down payment on its replacement - in 50K miles.

(I asked the mechanic to save my belt for me at 100K miles - instead of cutting it off - and it LOOKED like it was hardly used. Of course, that's the exterior; and who knows what the integrity of the internal material was?!?)

My wife's '02 is on the ORIGINAL timing belt. Only 132K miles, or so, but still.
Environment has been northern NV, Oregon, then storage for a few years in Dallas, TX, then Vegas for a couple of years, and now back in Fort Worth, TX.
I'll likely do it this autumn*.
*said that last year, and possibly the year before that

I think mine might be the original timing belt as well because there is no sticker on the timing belt cover showing that it was ever changed on my rx. So if that is the case; then i am going on 137,---- miles on the original belt and thankfully have had no issues yet(although something tells me i may be biding my time here as far as this goes; but the big problem is i dont have the $ to have the belt changed as its a very pricey job and so without the funds to get it done right now im not sure what im gonna do if something does happen. But i am keeping my fingers and toes crossed that nothing does happen for awhile(hopefully.....gulp lol)
