any LED replacements for the ones that light up the speedo, tach, temp and fuel ones. i looked at the back of my cluster and those seemed to be a totally different bulb, they look like a metal housing for those bulbs.

Great DIY instructions from the OP! Did this today and everything went well without trouble. NOTE-I highly recommend that you get an interior trim / molding tool kit from your local auto parts store if you don't have one. This makes removing trim easy and not damaging the trim pieces a must.

The other bulbs were stated earlier in this post as being #74 from the auto parts store but those were a little fat and didn't look like they'd fit into the bulb holder. O'Reilly's had slightly thinner bulbs #2721 ($5 for a 2 pack) which also said "Replaces 17037". The part number at the dealer without the holder: 9098111018 ($5.19 each). The bulbs so come out of these tiny holders by trying to pry them while pulling at the same time.
FYI: These bulbs, which mine has about 24 on the back of the cluster (I'm eating and don't want to count again), also fit the bulb for the shifter position indicator light in the center console.
FYI#2: The bulbs for the joint lighter and ignition are the same: 8499910250. These are bulbs attached to a harness.

I got a set of 5 incandescent bulbs with the base that works with the RX dash. The cost is $1.00 and shipping/handling is $7 from All Electronics. I order a lot of electronic parts from this source, they are reliable. With the time savings and the price of gas not a bad deal....

First time here.
Just picked up a 1999 RX300, 144K on the ODO. Test drove it really liked it.
My better half gets in the driver's seat to test drive. FIRST thing she mentions is the D light is out. I hadn't noticed it as I was too busy listening to the engine/trans.
I think I'll live with it being out.

got it done!
thank you all for the clear instructions. ironically, the local lexus dealer priced the bulb $1 cheaper than the Toyota dealer across the highway. I wasn't paying attention and took off the circuit board attached to the main circuit board...this is unnecessary as the bulbs responsible for lighting the gear indicators are at the bottom of the main board, unobstructed by the second circuit board. Anyway be careful inserting the new bulb...the plastic is very soft and you do not want to end up with a stripped screw. I was not able to detach the left most plug (there are three that connect the cluster to the wiring loom), but the cable was long enough that I could do the swap by placing the cluster upside down on the dashboard. again, you will need a soft towel to make sure the clear plastic cover does not get scratched.

With all your great help, I switched the bulbs of "D" and “2” . The local dealer (Edmonton, Canada) gave me a wrong part and I really do not feel like to drive 15 km to return a 6 CAD bulb.
My RX300 is 2002 with 180K (km not miles) and I found that the cluster top two screws are a little tight due to its age.I switched a few screws drivers before able to apply my force correctly without hurting the screw.
Be patient to unplug the cables, you never want to repair the old cables if you broke any of them.
There are a few metal clips of covers and cluster might fell down from their holder during the repair, pay attention to the clip number as we all want the job can be done flawless.
It is my 0.02

I may get into this project soon, and at the same time, I wish I could replace the white instrument needles with red ones. I could not seem to find any solution, especially a brainstorm lighted needle, like on my wife's ES300. Any solutions or ideas?
