Please explain "alarm going off"

And when does it happen and when does it stop?

Let me take a wild guess. Sometimes the brake fluid level sensor can fail, falsely indicating a low brake fluid level. As I recall, the test for this is to unplug the sensor at the top of the brake fluid reservoir and see if the problem goes away.

If this is like what has happened to me a couple of times, a new brake reservoir cap (about $100) solves the problem. There is a thread about a similar-sounding situation. Good luck!

Low brake-fluid in master cylinder or a bad float switch can explain the light, but not the alarm.

With an assistant take the cap off and slide the ring up and down and monitor the warning light.

I'll never know what went wrong with the caps. The caps, floats, and wiring looked brand new both times. The service rep at the dealer never could diagnose the problem. He said he wouldn't have believed me if he hadn't seen it with his own eyes. Apparently there is some kind of computer chip in the cap itself which went bad.

I'm glad it solved the problem. $80 isn't cheap, but it's probably less than the cost to diagnose it at the dealer, assuming they would be able to figure it out!
