Default Strange new noise

Started the old girl up earlier this week to a load groaning/whirring noise (like a REALLY noisy belt), totally out of the blue. Nothing like it previously, recently, or the day before. Tried squirting a little water on the belts (quietens most belt noises temporarily), tried a little belt dressing, too. No change. It improves when the engine is warmed up but it's still there.

Any ideas? Planning to take it in to the stealership next week, as it's definitely not right, but just wondered if anyone else had experienced anything like this? I'm mystified.

Following Monday bump!

Well, the noise appears to have gone away but in its place the battery (alternator) warning light has come on. I'm guessing that the new noise was the alternator (rectifier, voltage regulator?) and now that it has crapped out on me altogether....... no noise! (Well except for the original bearing noise, which is still there).

Time for a new alternator, I think. What's the going rate at a Lexus dealership? Toyota dealership? Independent? Unfortunately, I don't have the time or tools to DIY.

Sorry, not sure. The alternator is a fairly easy item to change, so it would be something I would handle myself.

Maybe someone can chime in?
