Default ski/snowboard rack...what to get?

i've had my 2003 rx300 for almost 2 months now. love it!

here's my situation. i'd like to drive the rx up to the mountains next weekend for some snowboarding and skiing.

what kind of rack should i get to put the skis and snowboards? what fits the rx? i don't want to spend too much. just something that will hold the skis and snowboards in place.

also...since it's such short notice...i prefer to get something at a store...instead of something online (unless it's a lot cheaper).

help please! thanks.

If all you are ever going to put on your rack is a ski rack, check with the dealer, (there is a Lexus ski-rack I believe), or go to your local Thule dealer and buy the appropriate size ski rack (4 pr or 6 pr, or there are some specifically for snowboards), and buy the appropriate clips to atttach the Thule rack to the cross-rails. You can find all the appropriate parts under the "fit guide' at www.thule.com, or your local dealer can help you (you can find a list of dealers at thule.com)

However, the factory corss-bars are only rated for 75lbs. so if you wanted to put a cargo/ski box on the rack (like I did), you should take the factory cross-bars off, and buy a Thule (or Yakima) rack that will fit in the tracks that are already mounted in the roof. from there you can buy whatever accessories (bikes, kayaks, cargo boxes) you want to fit the Thule cross-bars. Again, you can find all the parts in the fit guide at Thule.com

thanks. that helps.

btw...i just called my local lexus dealer parts department. they said that the lexus ski rack runs about $147 and will install it as well. i called another lexus dealer and they had it for $180.

if i call the salesperson that i bought the rx from...maybe he could get me the ski rack for an even lower price. worth a try.

any idea how much a thule rack would cost? i did a quick search...and it seems like a very nice and solid rack system.

also...i only plan on putting snowboards and skis on the rack. not planning to lug any cargo or stuff like that.

advice?

I'd go with the rack supplied by the dealer. You will probably spend more with a Thule. I spent about the same on my Toyota roof-mounted bike rack from the Lexus dealer.

If they want to charge for installation, just do it yourself. Very simple.

I think the Thule rack would run you about $240 for the bars & $100 for the ski attachment. But if you are only carrying skis and/or bikes, I would stick with the Lexus rack. The Lexus crossbars look much better on the RX than the Thule's - that was my biggest reluctance in getting rid of the factory bars.

I got my lexus ski rack for 180 from my dealer.

It looks great! having everything say lexus on it just makes the rx seem even more great!

If youre planning strapping a board and some skiis on the lexus ski rack youre out of luck. It only holds 4 skiis OR 1 board.

I have to shove my board into the trunk and carry the skiis up top. Maybe you could get a discount if you buy 2 lexus ski racks? I think I may break down and go buy another lexus ski rack for my board.

i've been doing a little shopping at the local ski/snow shops.

the thule ski carrier (flat top) goes for about $150 total with all the locks and attachments. holds up to 6 pairs of skis. it fits snowboards as well.

the barrecrafter ski carrier (flat top) goes for about $105 (plus 10% off) and includes the locks and attachments. holds up to 6 pairs of skis. fits snowboards as well.

and of course the lexus oem ski carrier is $147.

from what i've been told...the thule is the best on the market and barrecrafter is a close second. no idea of the lexus one. although this forum seems to think it looks the best.

in terms of price...the barrecrafter ends up being around $95. not bad really.

opinions?

does anyone have pictures of the lexus one?

btw...these ski attachments will go along with my roof rack and crossbars. don't planning on getting anything else. i understand that it only holds 75 pounds. that's not a problem.

Does anybody have any pictures of the Lexus rack?
I understand it's a Yakima, but it says Lexus on it.

Thanks
