Default K&N Air Filter

How many of you out there have replaced the stock filter with the direct fit from K&N?

I normally buy these for all my cars but wanted to see if anyone out there had done the replacement and got any noticeable improvements as a result?

Are you talking about the drop in filter? I had one in briefly, but took it out. I didnt notice much if any difference in performance or mpg. Just louder when you get on the throttle. Plus make sure you dont over oil it. Or it will contaminate your air flow sensor in the air box.

I stay away from oiled filter because of what Lexus114 touched on above. They like to get the MAF oily and set off a CEL.

I've had a K&N air filter in my 01 RX for years and probably over 100K by now. As stated above, you must be careful and not over do it with the oil after cleaning it. I did that early on and did get the CEL. I cleaned the MAF and air intake, etc. then reset the CPU and it went away. MPG improvement might be minimal if at all. I noticed better pickup performance some after cleaning it, but nothing fantastic. I'd have to honestly say the best advantage is not having to pay $15-20 bucks for a filter several times a year. I like cleaning my filter regularly and having the RX run smoothly. And my pocket book feels better too.

Have had one since 2001 when we got the SUV. No improvements in MPG, so don't go looking for any. If anything, just more noise. The engine re-calibrates for the increase in air flow and readjusts all the sensors accordingly, so it's really only a noticeable improvement on WOT.

Thanks everyone, my expectations are set correctly now. (Was really hoping for an MPG improvement). I did put this in my Yukon and got the same CEL that you all referred to. Cleaning the MAF took care of it in that vehicle as well.

If I find one at a good price I'll probably pull the trigger.

Ehhhhhh, you only need to replace the air filter (engine) once every 30 thousand miles.

+1, and a used filter is going to do a better job of filtering the air than a brand new filter.

i have k&n filters in all my cars and love them, and yes you don't need much oil on them and yes only my saleen is the only one that did gain, but at 460+ horses it does help. know to answer your question mine k@n filter was 38 or 42 dollars but you never replace it again. paper filters are not to bad but what do they cost don't know 10 to 13 bucks 90,000 miles of driving to = the price of a K@n. like the guy above said it made his car louder why? its putting more air into your car and what is your engine a big air pump,so with a chip yes you might see a little gain in top end, better gas only so so but you will be making your engine better breathing and that is good, especially if you are keeping it for a long time
