Lexus RX 300 won't start (see video )

Hello ,

If anyone can help , please do. The lexus rx 300 is 10 years old , and this is the first major problem after all these years . Please see video to diagnose the possible problems with the car.

Due to freq response of the comp it is a bit hard ... it looks like the starter is spinning but the engine is not turning over [for a successful start the engine needs to be tuned over and catch ignition.]

Seems like a bad starter ... the starter motor is working but the little gear is not engaging with the flywheel

Here is what Salimshah is describing. The starter in the first and second photos (it's just to the leftside of the black airbox in the engine bay.

In the third photo you can see the torque converter (round black thing) and this hooks up to the flywheel shown in the last photo.

The little gear is that that top thing that protrudes from the end of the starter and should extend outwards when you start the vehicle, but apparently it sounds like it isn't.

Is it a pain to change a starter? I haven't heard of anyone having one go out on here. I noticed he has 118K on it.

Not too hard at all. You have to remove the black airbox to get at it. Then there are two bolts on each side of the starter and two electrical connectors (one of which is held in by a small nut) that need to be disconnected.

Keep in mind, it is over the net diagnosis. Other have not disagreed, but you need to confirm the problem before venturing out to do the repairs yourself.

Removal of the starter in this car is absolutely one of the easiest DIYs I have ever done. Remove airbox and battery, a few readily accessible bolts, and its out. You may discover that all you have to do is replace the contacts within the starter assembly; again, very easily done, and it solved my problem.

Yep, sounds like the starter. It could be a bad motor, a bad spring or a bad gear. May not require the starter to be replaced, although I'm not sure if anybody rebuilds them in the shop any more (as opposed to replacing them and sending in the old core).

Don't crank it like that too often - the gears are grinding and you don't want to damage your flywheel.

thank you very much same problem as Paha this moring turn out to be the battery defective, after replace battery car work fine!
