Default Radio Replacement

Hi All,

I am new to the forum and the Lexus brand. I have been a die hard Mercedes man for some time. Recently my girlfriend’s car started running poorly so, we decided that it was time for a new one. I picked up 99 rx300 base with 90,070 miles. Thus far it has been a great car with one acceptation. The radio is not up to par. She had a pioneer 5.1 touch screen with nice highs and a Fosgate p3 10 in the trunk. I would like to transfer this system into the new car but it looks like it is going to pose a challenge.

I found this site. http://www.soundfxonline.com/Projects.aspx# It has an awesome custom installation. I don’t plan to go so crazy in the trunk but I really like the dash. Also I am considering moving the AC controls to the space under the radio where the seat warmer switch would go. I am going to be taking this on with a friend of mine. We both have a background in car audio installations so we should be capable of this.

I can post picks of the install if any one wants. Also I am open to any information you all may have that will make my life a little easier. Please fell free to comment any feed back is appreciated.

Thanks for taking a look,
Insame1

If you use the search function you will find that others have done (or wanted to do) what you contemplate. Check those out first, because it is not an easy task.

Welcome to Club Lexus!

It would be awesome, if you posted along the way.

I've pondered the options of upgrading just the head unit, mainly for iPod integration. Because, otherwise it's sounds fine to me. It's just too much work, considering the climate controls and such is controlled through the radio. People have moved the climate control into the glovebox, to adjust for the modifications.

The audio system in the link you posted look's awesome. For more idea's as to what other RX300 owners have done in terms of modification's, check out cardomain.com

This guy has a pretty sweet setup too! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBb4p...8&feature=plcp

I think he meant 90,070. LOL
It would be pretty sweet if it had less than 10k.

Hyper, I watched the video above for DVD setup. You have to move the gear shifter to N or D to pull out the screen. Overall good.

Yeah, I noticed that as well. It's not a huge hassle, but it's a hassle nonetheless. That sub seems extremely powerful. lol

Update: I ordered an OEM radio from eBay and it should be here within the next week. I am going to take this one apart and see if I can figure it out. I will post pics!

Any one know what triggers the stock amps. Is it can-bus? I have read people talking about adding an aftermarket deck like shown above and the amps not turning on. I would like to avoid having to rewire the doors and add amps and cross overs.

Even thought it looks like I am the only one following this I will continue to update. I picked up the new radio that I got from eBay and started taking it apart. I think this is going to be much easier than I thought. The tape deck/radio is not attached to the face at all. Now all I have to do is extend the wires for the ac controls and build a box to mount it. Then I need to mount the new radio and fab the surround kit. Lucky for me the stock brackets will hold the new system right where I want it. i have been taking pics and will post a write up when I am done.
