I had a noise coming out of the rear , took the car to the dealer and ended up paying $1400 for replacing rear strut mounts, shock absorbers and the noise is still there and now they are telling me it is the rear bearing and collar and costs ~ $800. Any advise, I am telling that they need to give me a break and the comment is that the material itself is $650 and that is what they can do this for. Any advise folks. To me the strut mounts etc had nothing to do with the problem.

This is a tough one.

Who have you spoken to? Service adviser or Service manager or Lexus Corp? You may need to go through these steps.

From your view point what they performed was bad diagnosis and replaced parts and charged you labor on unneeded parts.

From the service guys view point, they conducted examination and made their best diagnosis and possible detected some problems and then they asked your permission to perform the service. [keep in mind there could be torn boot, leaking strut etc pointing to a problem in suspension ,,, which could have been there in addition to the real source of noise]. After fixing those they can then diagnose the next problem.

Real Issue:
Did they diagnose the problem based on the complaint and test. Bearing problems only happen when the vehicle is rolling and do not go away on a smooth road. Suspension problems are more evident on rough/uneven road. Then there is the visual evidence and bounce check.

Armed with this you can make your case. Since it is not a warranty issue, the money will have to come from you or the service department [service dept money is generated when they service all of our vehicles ,,, from us the consumers ]. I would urge you to be firm and polite in making your argument. Dont forget (but dont bring it up) that you have the suspension serviced already with new parts.
