Reengineered rear valve cover??
#121
I just changed the PCV Valve before heading home form the east coast and still used 2 quarts of oil (about 1100 miles).
I do not have any oil leaks or blue exhaust smoke and car runs fine. There is some oil residue on the rear cover around PCV valve.
So, my question is - Can you replace valve cover with updated replacement cover on 1999 RX300? Does it all fit properly?
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

I have the parts and tomorrow the work will be done. I will let you know if the valve cover replacement fixes my oil consumption problem. I am keeping my fingers crossed!

The work is completed: no sludge, compression test was good, but have not taken trip yet to see if oil consumption problem has been alleviated. The cost was $500+ and I supplied the parts. The diagnostics test and compression test were included in the aforementioned cost. I will advise later after long test drive. Hope all goes well!
Thanks to all for the info.

Hey Gang,
Just noticed this thread. Replacing the valve cover on my 2000 RX300 (~195K) with the re-designed version is a job I researched and did about a year-and-a-half ago - It made a world of difference, and to this day I don't use oil between changes. The car gets used regularly and has seen many several-hour trips since the update. I didn't read the whole thread today, so maybe this is already posted, but the youtube link below was incredibly helpful when I did the job. I'm not a mechanic, but I'll try anything - I seem to remember I spent about 8 hours over a couple days to complete the job.

It worked
I changed rear valve cover two weeks ago. This past weekend was the first time I had been on an extended interstate drive. I'm happy to say my RX didn't use any oil. The same trip before the change, it would use approx. half a quart.
Thanks to this forum for all the post!

RX300 - What later models have the re-engineered valve cover?
I just bought a 2000 RX300 and I am going to replace the rear valve cover with the re-engineered one to try to stop or reduce oil consumption.
What I would like to know is:
What later model(s) and year(s) is the re-engineered valve cover on as standard equipment? I want to know this so I can buy a used valve cover from a wrecking yard. One post mentioned the RX330. Is this correct and is that the only model.
Is the re-engineered valve cover on the 3MZ-FE engines? So if I get one from a 3MZ-FE engine will it be the re-engineered one?
Thanks, I am new to this. This is my first post, not sure this is how to ask this.

Fastnoypi. I just bought a 2000 RX300. So per your post, the RX330 has the re-engineered valve cover to stop or reduce oil consumption on the RX300's? Are there any other Lexus models that have this valve cover? I want to buy one from a wrecking yard rather than a dealer.

Per the wiki the following cars should have the same rear valve cover
2003–2007 Toyota Highlander
2003–2008 Toyota Camry Solara (V6)
2003–2006 Toyota Sienna
2003–2006 Toyota Camry (SE V6)
2005–2010 Toyota Highlander Hybrid (reduced power output)
2003–2006 Lexus RX 330
2005–2009 Lexus RX 400h (reduced power output)
2003–2006 Lexus ES 330
more comments can be found in the Re Engineered valve cover thread
if you cannot source one, the 3rd revision of the RX300 valve cover starting in late 2001-02 is a good alternative to clean up and use for at least 80k or so ..but IMO, the RX330 rear valve cover shielded baffle design is better.

fastnoypi. Thanks for the quick reply and info!
I pulled the valve cover off my RX300 engine and looked for a stamped or cast part number on it, but could not see one. Do you know if the valve covers have the part number on them somewhere? If they do then I could be certain to get the right one (used). I have seen some pictures of them on here that I could try to match up to.
Thanks..

fastnoypi. Thanks for the help. The pictures on post #14 are great. From those I will be able to tell the redesigned cover from the older one.
I'm curious of the meaning to your user name.

Toyota Seal packing 102
I am planning on replacing the rear valve cover in a couple of weeks and have been reading the very helpful threads and watching videos to prep for the job. The youtube video by Dailydriven79 that is posted in this thread shows him using the Toyota Seal packing 102 in spots on the valve cover seal. It is my understanding it is also recommended by Lexus, yet I haven't seen anyone mention doing this in the DIY writeups. Are most folks skipping this step and still avoiding leaks at the gasket?
