Default Need help with 2000 RX 3000 Transmission

Our 2000 RX 300 transmission appears to be toast.
Took it to Lexus dealer and they said we needed a new one at a quote of $6,500.
We can move the shifter but the transmission does not activate allowing the vehicle to move forward or backward.
Another mechanic/transmission shop looked at it and quoted $4300. Another quoted $5600.
All said we needed a new transmission and transfer case. Some suggest a new torque converter as well.
If that be the case, where would you suggest we have this transmission rebuilt here in Denver?
I'm guessing that once they get inside and see the Planitaries (sp?) we'll probably be looking at even more $$$.

Help!!!

I forgot to add that it's an AWD vehicle.

I feel your pain. You're better off getting a remanufactured unit from Toyota/Lexus, rather than having the unit locally 'rebuilt.'

I think Toyota/Lexus does not rebuild transmissions .. they farm the job out and stock reman transmissions.

If you decide to have yours rebuilt or get a rebuilt one ask about warranty. Also couple of people reported that the transhop did their stuff and then told the owner to get the software/re-program at Lexus. I would not like to be put in that situation and would prefer one shop do it all ans then stand behind the warranty .... that gives the edge to the Lexus dealership ,,,but will cost you more.

Then there is also a question about the loaner.

I also recommend that the rear main seal be replaced. One member wrote about dealership was reluctant to do this. So check with them.

You could buy used Toyota highlander tranny U140F for $1200 or less about 43000 mileages. It works with Lexus AWD.

$6,500? Over here that's about KBB private party value. Parting out your vehicle would be an option if you cannot get a decent repair price and use the monies saved from the repair and parting out on another car. Just a thought, depending on the mileage and condition of your RX.

Why not check with an independent shop that does a lot of Toyota rebuilds. The transmissions are nearly identical. If they are experienced in Toyota rebuilding and have a good reputation, surely they can do the same for a Lexus. I have read on the forums of mom and pop independents with good reputation doing a rebuild for under $2k. Certainly worth a try. Shouldn't cost you anything for just asking the questions.
