1999 rx300 4000rpm @ 65mph?
As stated in the title, is 4000RPM @ 65MPH normal? The cold weather has brought on some weird problems to my RX lately. I'm having it serviced at North Park Lexus here in San Antonio on/around Wednesday. Anything will help, thanks.

A check engine light will commonly lock out overdrive. The light does not need to have anything to do with the transmission at all. Bad O2 sensor with a check engine light will lock out overdrive.
First thing I would do is disconnect the battery to see if the light goes away on it's own. If it is still there or comes right back run over to autozone and have them put a code reader on it and report back what code you have.

Pay attention to 2000Lex post.
The transmission locks out certain gear to help engine warm up quicker. One should avoid going over 3000 rpm [not backed by any scientific data, just a figure] till the optimum operating temperature is reached.

My check engine light has been on and off several times per month, it never locks out overdrive. I don't think that is a valid explanation.

Anyway Cwall just posted and never came back, so we won't know if it's only when engine is cold or it happens all the time, but as stated before, the ECU locks out overdrive until the engine gets to about the 3rd hash mark on the temp gauge. Just keep it slow (55 mph) until the temp rises and then you'll be fine. Usually for me, within probably 1 mile of 55 mph driving and the transmission kicks up.
As for the check engine and always locking the transmission, that is not a definite statement. It will only lock for some errors (I don't know which) but when my light was on for coil pack error, it drove fine until I came to idle.

I am curious, too. He's going to a good dealership (that's where I used to take my Lexus up to from Mexico in the early days of my RX300 ownership).
I am going to put my finger on that cold weather as I used to get a similar issue with a high RPM like that back in Mexico (haven't seen it here), but since I used to go at higher velocities south of the border I do remember some days like that where the RPM would be higher than normal.

Sorry about the late reply. The car is completely Warmed up and the CEL is still on. The TRAC light is on as well, they usually come on simultaneously. I figured I had major problems once the CEL started blinking with the TRAC light still on..It's at North Park Lexus as I post, so I shall find out the damage soon. I should also mention to the post from AlexusAnja that my idle is TERRIBLE. Many times it can come down to 200-300 RPM's, yes 200-300. I will come back and post ALL details I can find. In the meanwhile, I will drive around the rental: 2010 Lexus HS250h..amazing!

Coilpacks
+1 to that... I would say coil packs have packed it up. Mine blinked each time the coil packs went. The difference between light just one and light blinking is that light on is just some electronic component went and it's not "urgent" per say. Light blinking means something critical has gone wrong and driving could be hazardous.
I blinked on three occasions for coil pack. First time I drove it, next two had to have it flat bedded to the dealer. Coil pack, each about $280 parts & labor.

I received the car back and all they have to say is spark plugs?? I just had the spark plugs changed 5 days ago..I will find out more about the coil packs. They also wouldn't give me the rest of the CEL codes without changing the spark plugs for $500. "They have to start with the first code and move on to the next" Doesn't Autozone check for free?
