K&N Mileage Report #3

Took a road trip vacation...Seeing as how I have the coolest ride on the planet...Why not?

Tank #1: Well, I did it...25.2MPG from Raleigh NC to Easton MD via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Not a whole lot of 65mph speed limit, so I had to keep it below 70 MPH (generally under 65MPH). Wow!
Was averaging 23.5 mpg in these conditions
This tank avg: 25.2mpg
- A 7.2% increase

I Went 399 miles before the gas light came on. I was tempted to try to go 500 miles on the tank, but was not confident there were enough gas stations where I was going, so filled up at 450 miles. I believe I could have made it!

Tank #2: Mixed city/highway, all-purpose driving around MD/DE yielded 22.9MPG. Lots of small towns @30-35MPH.

Tank #3: I decided to step on it a little. A lot more agressive on the gas pedal. Speed limits - NC 70mph, VA 60-65mph, MD 60mph. Traffic was moving well, so I fell in line and really wound it up a few times on the Interstate (85-90MPH). It was sunny and 99°F, so I had the AC blasting in my Black Onyx convection oven...Still made 22.4MPG.

So, as I wrote in an earlier post, I am confident that I can average 25mpg, if I can keep it under 70mph, but, hey, I've done it and I would rather enjoy the ride than worry about the reconciliation at the gas pump.

So, to conclude, I highly recommend the K&N FilterCharger. It's $50, but that's a bargain as I am saving 1.5-2 gallons of gas per tank/week. That's $2-$2.50 per tank/week, so in 6 months I'll have recovered my investment and never again have to buy another air filter for my ride.

Thanks for the report Paddy Wagon. I've been meaning to buy a K&N...need to...eventually will. I think I'll wait until either my current one needs replacing or I buy an RMM exhaust (whichever happens first)

BTW those are some great mileage figures.

Now the question is, do I re-install my OEM filter for my 5K service?
I really have no desire to hear any crap from Lexus for using the K&N.

I went in for my 15k with the "do not throw away" sticker and the K&N sticker on the filter cover an told them what I had. No problem, but I did check later to make sure they did not replace it.

Yeah, I'll try it ObiDon...Sounds good...
But, I still really have no desire to hear any crap from Lexus.

I sure do dig this K&N, though.
Better mileage/response.
Oil still is honey golden after 4,200mi.

Advance Auto Parts...$51.99, but there was a coupon in the local
paper for 10% regular priced Items, so it was 46.79 , plus tax.

I recently picked up the cleaner/recharger kit
from Manny, Mo and Jack for $9.99.

So...$58, plus tax for the whole enchilada. Still a good deal.

While getting my RX serviced, yesterday I told my Service Consultant that I missed my RX (with the K&N) because the loaner RX was so sluggish.

He had not really heard about the K&N, so I enlightened him and also told him about the TRD High-flow filter (made by K&N?) that the dealership sold.

He bought a TRD filter that evening and installed it in his new RX 300. He was raving about it this afternoon.

It's all good.

Dunno, spin...Can you get one that fits?
That's a $50 experiment. I wish K&N made
their Fuel Injection Performance Kit for the RX.

They have kits for the 4Runner, Tacoma,
Tundra and Sequoia...Even the Corolla

So the question is...Got $50 laying around?

Default 26.9 MPG

Unbelievable!

26.9 MPG! All highway driving. No A/C. No interstates.
Running @64MPH and lower. Just 4 lane highways
with cruise control. Regular gas. Wow.

24.4 MPG on the way back. Had to run the A/C.

Again, thanks K&N.

Default k&n 2052

first and foremost, thanks to everyone for all the helpful info. i just took delivery on a 02 vapor blue rx300 (the third lexus in my car stable) and immediately ordered the 2052. problem is, it seems an inch or so too small. k&n suggests the 2145-1. is this a better fit?

Default Too small?

If it's too small, that's obviously not good. To check that out, just hold your K&N up back-to-back with the OEM filter you take out. I was concerned about it's dimensions, so I bought mine from a local Auto store so I could match it with the OEM.

Make sure you save your OEM filter in the K&N box.

I have an 02 Black Onyx. 33-2052 is a perfect fit. It's the filter recommended for "99 and up" on most web sites.
Dimensions for 33-2052 Air Filter; Panel; H 1"; ID 7.5"; OD 12.375" -

I have no experience with with 33-2145. Apparently there were some issues....Some people said it was too small.

33-2145-1 was released Mid-March, 2002.
That's what K&N matches up for the RX 300 on knfilters.com, now.
3 months ago 33-2052 was the part # for "99 and up".

Here's what I did to double check.
Surfed to www.fram.com, entered my vehicle, came away with part # CA7351.
Went back to knfilters.com and plugged in this cross-reference number.
Here's what I got
Fram CA7351= KN-33-2052
Fram CA7351= KN-33-2145

Good luck.
