with some great advice from lexmex, i replaced my main CAT with a test pipe (2 1/4) on my 1999 RX300; about a week ago and it runs alot better.
Small increase in performance. MPG is better and no CELs so far. I'm sure if i take out the other two cats i would see even greater performance.
Exhaust smells more now.

OP, when this happened, how bad was your MPG? I experience similar symptoms too and mine had dropped from 18mpg to now 13-14mpg.
The other day there was a CEL for cat below threshold bank 1.
