2000 RX300 - Trailer Towing Package Wiring
I know this subject has been brought up before, but I have not been able to figure out what I have based on reading them, talking to a dealer parts manager and the folks at the local U-haul.
I have installed the trailer hitch and would like to have the wiring hooked up so that I can pull a trailer to pick up my daughter who just graduated from UK.
I am the 2nd owner of a 2000 RX300, and the original owner, who serviced it regularly with Lexus. According to the original sticker, it has the "Towing Preparation Pkg w/ Transmission Oil Cooler". I have come to the conclusion that doesn't mean the wiring. I stopped by my local Lexus dealer and they said I needed "pigtail" assembly for $56.04, and it would just plug right in. I have not been able to find where this missing female plug is located, and when I showed the parts manager my car, he claimed that the female plug that I have is not standard equipment.
My wife is the 2nd owner of a 2001 RX300. In researching it I found a small blue box underneath the rear cover, by the spare, which says "Harness asst. towing converter". Denso #0940-48010, 061000150, PPE-PS. It was bolt down by the spare tire (AT approximately 10 o'clock).
I have also found another plug behind the drivers side - side panel near the fuel intake, on both cars. (This was the plug the parts manager said was not standard). Does this have anything to do with the trailer wiring?
I am assuming that is the Densi blue box is the converter box I need, and I will need to splice it in also? and I will need to purchase the complete wiring harness set, and tap into the tail lights, brakes and battery?
Hope this letter is not as confused as I am and would appreciate anyones two cents worth. Thanks. Adam

I can't add too much. I ordered my RX300 with the towing-prep option, but it came delivered with the hitch too. I agree with your dealer that it should be a simple plug-in installation, so no need to worry about any splicing. I'll leave further elaboration to those who have actually done it.

Yes, the blue box is the converter for the tow hitch wiring. Now look under the rear of the car for a black plastic cover. The pigtail is in there. I think it is held on by 3 nuts on a studs which are most likely quite rusted by now.

The Blue box is on my wife's 2001, and I have the trailer hitch on 2000. I did not find the connection underneath of mine, and I didn't get a chance to look under hers.
Believe it or not, I use my RX300 for work. I do the sales, and manage rental properties for my family business. We build new homes and remodeling, so having the hitch is handy to pull trailers. I also like to go fishing on occasion and pull a friends boat. Switching the trailer hitch to my wife's isn't an option. It sounds like I am going to have to do some re-wiring.
Thanks for your help.

I would check under your wife's for comparision. I know the blue box and the connector were there in 2001. But here's the part I am not sure of: I think in 2000 the connector didn't exist. You had to use a more complicated wiring install which is shown in this post:
