What ever makes the owner sleep better. There is no hard evidence any of 10-15k, or 15-20k, or 20-25k or 25-30k or 30-35k extends the life of the transmission. I personally think it is luck of the draw, the way drive the vehicle makes the difference.

Also the reported failure in the Forum do not constitute large enough sample size. At the same time I agree that servo motors, lock-actuators and transmission are most frequently discussed. The senosors too, but we have tend to think of them as wear items.

are there signs that the engine or tranny are starting to fail or a way to tell what the condition is? is letting the car "warm up" after starting ideal or is driving right after starting perfectly fine?

I can answer the bold only with a question first/ Have you read the owners manual?

Best is to start and check gauges, check every one is in seat belt and then drive off. Try not to go over 3k rpm till the engine reaches optimism temp.

i didn't know the owners manual had directions. it says to wait 10 seconds (or longer depending on the weather), but nothing regarding the gauges. i assume you just mean to make sure there aren't any lights on indicating any problems. how do i know what the engine temp is or what is optimal?

We are getting off topic here ,,,, please start a new thread if you like to discuss further.

Optimum temp is near the 1/2 way mark of the temp gauge.

All vehicles theses days suggest you to drive off and use the energy loss to heat up the vehicle quicker. Key being dont stress the engine till things reach operating temp.

Checking the gauges or NOT checking the gauges is typical of person who gets a license to drive in USA, where it is get the key in ignition and off you go .. [sorry for using a broad brush to paint].

He has 700+ thousand miles same motor same trans don't ask me how I can't tell you. I drove a 1986 Toyota Cressida 529,000 miles I had a 1991 Lexus LS 400 it went 400,000 my 2001 RX 300 only has150,000. I used mobile one in the transmissions the power steering the motor in the rear ends changing it every 35,000 miles in all my cars and nothing ever wore out. I am now using Max Life from Walmart at about $24 a gallon on my RX 300 I drained four quarts through the drain plug on the bottom of the transmission pan and refill I do this every 30,000 front wheel drives don't last as long as rear wheel drives. I am also using Max life in my power steering but I'm still using mobil one extended service in my engine I changed between 10 and 15,000 miles. I plan to put about 400,000 miles on my RX 300, you can rest assure it will go the distance. If you live in cold weather synthetic oil is the only way to go if you live in Arizona or Texas or Southern Cal again synthetic oil will operate in superhot climate and stand up to whatever you throw at it this has been my experience over the years. Synthetic oil is way overkill our engines don't even put it to work, that's why our engines can go upwards of 500,000 miles.Been there and done it
bill, how long have you been using mobil or maxlife in the transmission? i wanted to use maxlife but decided to be safe rather than sorry and used toyota t-iv instead.

Me and my wife bought a 2001 AWD RX 300 a couple of months ago. It had some minor issues, half of them fixed by now.
Paid almost $ 4000 for the vehicle and it has ~ 260 000 km (> 160k miles) on the odometer. Knock on wood she'll last long.

Default Aloha

I have to say that with a few bumps along the way, my 99 rx 300 has had 3 owners including myself, total with a small rear end accident (only scratched bumper) has almost 300,000 miles on it and is still going strong. I had to replace the drive shaft in 2016 which put a hurt on my pocket bout 800$ luckily my dealership only charges for parts and not labor so it could have been worse. Its not in the best looking condition. My driver seat made of leather is torn and my mechanic had to rewire the car so the ABS light is on. If not on its my reminder the brake lights are not working but considering how many miles it has on it i dont mind those things i absolutely love it!

You paid for labor. That part cost them much less than $800, probably less than $250.

Got 296,000 on my 02. Bought it less than a year ago and it’s handled daily city driving luckily well. Planning on doing the brakes (less than 20%), timing belt and water pump soon so I can don’t have to worry about it later on. Anyone else replaced those parts recently? Any advice?

Also, had a friend help me do a recent oil change and I used non synthetic because it’s what my friend uses on his RAV4. Can I make the switch to synthetic next oil change without worrying about what was used before? Thanks everyone!

Well, let's see. Last year my engine had a rod knocking so I replaced the engine with one of those JDM deals on ebay that have 50k to 60k miles on them and so far so good. Before the engine was installed I had my mechanic install a new timing belt and pulleys, water pump, and hydraulic tensioner just for the peace of mind. It is recommended to go ahead and replace the water pump when replacing the timing belt because of how it all works together and replace the hydraulic tensioner also. I also replaced the alternator because after the engine install, the original alternator crapped out on the test drive.
If you want to go with synthetic oil, you can make the switch on your next oil change and it will not hurt anything. I have Mobil One SuperSyn synthetic oil in my engine. Anyhoo, I hope this all helps you.

Read the thread on timing belt changes. I did it a couple of months ago, summarized here:
