High RPM when cruising
Hi everyone,
I have a 2001 RX300 AWD with 66,000 miles on it. Recently, the O2 sensor after the catalytic converter fell off because the bolts holding it to the muffler frame broke loose due to the snow/ice hitting it. I brought it to Carx and they drilled out the old left over bolt and put on new ones; so it is now attached back to the muffler frame (no air leak).
I notice that when I drive on the highway at about 70mph, the RPM is at about or exactly 3000. I am not sure if this was that case before the O2 sensor fell off, but it is now doing this. If this is the case, it seems like it's consuming a lot of gas. So, can anyone tell me if your car is doing the same thing---3,000 rpm at 70mph? If not, then do you know what the problem is? Thanks in advance.

May be some one will before I can check it out for you.
In the mean time you can check if the OD is on or off. Usually the light should come on if the OD is off.... just in case the wire got disconnected. The switch is right below the Shift release thumb button.

I seem to remember 3,000 rpm = 80 mph in the RX. This is from memory so maybe someone else will verify or I will check once I drive the car.
If this is correct your rpm does sound to high for 70 mph. Count your shifts and determine if it is shifting into overdrive. You mentioned the sensor problem. Did it cause a check engine light? If so was it reset when the sensor was fixed? Some check engine light codes prevent the transmission from shifting into overdrive until the problem is corrected and the light reset. Could this be it?

Forget the talk about not shifting into overdrive. I just used the wife's RX to run to the store. If I switch overdrive off with the button on the shifter, 3,000 rpm = 53 mph. You are going quite a bit faster than that at 3,000 rpm, so you must be in overdrive. I was only on local roads and was not able to verify the rpm at higher speeds with overdrive on. However, the RX is geared fairly low and will register higher rpm at highway speeds than most cars you are used to.

75mph =>2500
80mph little below 3000
These were engine warmed up on flat road. [in overdrive]
