Problem with automatic transmission fluid level
I followed the DIY and changed my ATF fluid last week. Drained both plugs, removed the pan and drained the strainer. After adding 5 quarts of fluid, the next step was to disconnect the return line and run the car until the fluid changed color. It probably went a minute until the fluid became a clear red. It also started sputtering at the same time. I'm wondering if I drained too much out. I didn't notice any change in color though until the fluid started sputtering.
Since then, I've added another 3 quarts of fluid and the level always seems to be at the very bottom of the dipstick whether the car is cold or hot. I clean the dipstick, put the car in drive then back into park before checking the level. I always check the level when the car is running.
Does anyone have any idea why this car is taking so much fluid? How much more can I possibly add?

How is the tranny shift so far? One possibility is the ATF level might be low to begin with? I would add to the full level and when I drained out 2 more quarts, it does not sputter.

At first it revved before engaging first gear. As I added more fluid that went away. It seems like I keep adding fluid to a bottomless hole. Nothing is leaking though.

Then you are all right filling more ATF as long as you closely monitor the fluid level. I will modify the DIY instruction to include checking prior fluid level and overfill by a little before cooler line disconnect to give more margin of error.
