I just got my car back from the body shop about three days ago. I don’t really know if they replace the gas tank or anything, but now when I fill up my tank the pump don’t fill up by itself anymore. I stop fueling like the tank is full but it not. It wasn’t even at $10 bucks yet and I have to keep on pressing and clicking the nozzle until it get full which really took at long time. Does anyone know how to fix this or should I take it back to the repair shop.

Normally there is a sensor on the Gas Pump Nozzle that detects the back flow (change of pressure) when you fill the tank. So if the gas nozzle releases too early or never releases then mostly the issue is with the Pump Nozzle.

Some pump nozzles work better if the nozzle is inserted to the hilt and some if it is held back by 1/4".

One can not eliminate the gas tank (specially if it has been fixed recently), but the Ckeck engine light would come up if there is any issue with the gas tank, fuel cap, vapor recovery system.

So try a different pump.

What may have happened is that from sitting out a while at the body shop, there was no movement of pressure inside the tank, thus causing the problem at hand. A similar situation occurs when one adds octane boosters or racing gas (I have firsthand experience with both). As Salim mentioned, do try another station, but this problem should pass after a few fillups.

I have the same problem. But for some reason it only happens at Arco. Not just a specific one, but every Arco I go to. It's getting really annoying too.

There are multiple sensors for gas shutoff.

If the pump is usking "Husky" then the bellows (accordian like rubber) must be fully selaed and the nozzle must be inserted all the way to the hilt, forming a good seal all the way around.

I have had better success with Exxon pumps by keeping the nozzle pulled back by 1/4". [they do not use Husky]

If some one else is pumping nearby and they keep opening and closing their valve, the back end pressure in the supply trips your nozzle as well.

i've been having this problem for the last 2-3 years. yesterday gas was nearly completely empty but the pump wouldn't agree...

Try holding the filler tip 1/2" away from the full hilt position ... just in case the pump is sensitive.

Check the vent pipe ... from the tank back to the filler hole (few cm short of the opening. This lets the displaced air, (as the tank fills with gas) the air from the tank is displaced out by the vent tube.

Let us know if this needs more explaining.
