Angry question about keys - advice needed

Hi there,

I recently bought a 1999 lexus rx300. I locked the keys in the car. I had to call a locksmith. They opened the car. I got the keys, however, now I cannot open the drivers door from the outside and passenger door will not open with key. Does it reprogrammed or should I take it to the lexus dealer for repair? I was curious if this was common these models or if it was something that needs taken apart. Thanks for your help. I only have a subkey that was given to me when I bought the car. thanks,

Tracy

It depends on how the locksmith opened the locked door. Something could have been damaged/bent.

I would give locksmith a call and tell him/her the after affects of the service call. Ask him/her, should you go to the dealer or let them have the first look.

If you are willing to pay for the repair yourself then it is your call.

Note: You should have 2 master keys and one valet key + 1 emergency key.

I only was given a sub key (not the master key) for the car.

The lock initially worked for the passenge side after reopening but then the lock died also. I was just wondering if its possible it needed to be reprogrammed.

The computer only checks for programmed keys when you insert them in the ignition, not the outside locks.

You should have received two black master keys with the keyless entry buttons built into them. If you were using keyless entry, then the keys would have to be programmed for that to work, but a locksmith shouldn't do anything to break the keyless entry.

The valet key is gray and without any buttons. The valet key won't lock/unlock the glovebox.

The emergency key will unlock the doors but it won't start the car. It wasn't until 2001 when they added a transponder chip to the emergency key holder so that it would also start the car.

If you're missing any of the first three keys (2 master + valet), you should also talk to your Lexus dealer to make sure those keys are deleted from the computer.

A black replacement key costs $200 from the dealer. This may or may not include the reprograming of the new key. My key was cut in Detroit prior to my receiving it.
