Buying a new RX300
Hello, Im new to the RX model. I am going to test drive a 1999 RX300 tomorrow. It has 83K miles on it, they are asking $13,500. Does anyone have a checklist of things to look for when buying a used RX300? It is has 4wd if that helps.
Much appreciated ~ Josh

There's not real checklist.. Research this forum as to what is failing. 1999 was introduced in 1998. 1999 was a long year.
- Insure you get complete maintenance records.. Services performed at 30K 60K and 90K are critical. If not ... Pass.
- Cracked front downpipe, that was improved in 2000... Pass
- Transmission fluid changes with Toyota fluid documented ... If not, Pass. Transmissions fail.
- Oil seeping from the hole between the engine and transmission, indicating engine rear seal bad. If leaking, Pass.
- Records of oil changes with filter. Engines are prone to sludge and fail. If not ...Pass.
- The next maintenance service includes timing belt replacement, with idlers and water pump. Additionally, spark plugs are due. Expensive to install.
My opinion, unless you have reliable records, you have a money pit. Pass on it if this is the case.

Just for future reference, the tranny fluid should look blood red (not light red, not silvery, not pinkish). With oil leaking, I would check about 5 minutes after a test drive underneath the vehicle. Also check the engine belts to see if they are worn. Checking fluid levels (Brake, PSF and Coolant can also help). I can generally spot the Brake Fluid right off the bat if it is not golden in color.
