What Oil are you guys using in Youi RX300?
Are you sticking with the 5W-30 or did you switch to 10W-40/30. Did you guys go synthetic or stay Fossil? My wife is getting only 16.7 MPG! I know she needs a oil change and I am going to change her air filter. Just changed all the brake pads around they were scrapping in the back. I am just trying to get optimum gas mileage.

sticking with the 5W - 30. I have been using Mobil 1 since the first free oil change. I figure if I decide to buy at the end of the lease, then i know I took good care of the engine. If I decide not too then I am out about $120 in the extra cost of the Mobil one for the 10 oil changes that will come during the 48k mile lease. Worth the piece of mind. The computer consistantly reads 19.2 MPG for mixed driving here in NJ.
Straight Hwy mileage is still close to 22mpg. Have 26k miles on the '02 RX

The Mobil One is synthetic.........
Mine is AWD too and using a K&N airfilter. Filter has at least 20k miles on it, never have cleaned it or
re-oiled it yet. Also still running it with the original Bridgestone tires. Only use 87 octane.

Got a pic of your K&N? Did you see a noticeable increase in mileage once you started using it. I think I am going to start using Synthetic. Wonder why I am getting such crappy mileage.

sorry no pic of the K&N. There is a lot of discussion here on the board about the pro and cons of using the K&N. Do a search on K&N and be prepared to do a lot of reading. I am just using the direct relplacement, just drop it in type.
Pro - slight increase in gas milage, maybe 1.5 - 2 mpg. Possible increase in horsepower.( i have no way of measuring or do I really feel a difference)
Con - can screw up your MAF Mass airflow sensor. (there are also good threads on cleaning it if you do foul it). You really must follow directions and clean and oil it correctly.

Living in Mexico, I do not always have access to the best oils (much less the best prices). My vehicle is a 99 RX AWD.
I have experimented over the years (and you can read my prior posts) with 5W-30, 10W-30, 15W-50 and now 5W-50 (not available in the US as I understand it). Every time, I used Mobil 1. I have a couple of Lexus buddies throughout Mexico using Castrol, imported Amsoil and synthetic Quaker State. I used a K&N gold oil filter.
Keep in mind, I live in a very hilly environment, lots of speed bumps and high altitude at 7,700 feet. The 5W-30 and 10W-30 burn too quickly. I also noticed that the 5W-30, after about two months of use, feels like a 15 or 20 weight. I want to do a UOA down here, but still looking for a good place. The 15W-50 was great for tough climbs, not much else and lost about 2-4 mpg.
The new 5W-50 feels much like the 15W-50, but you can tell it flows better. Surprisingly, I do not get the loss in MPG that I get with the 15, but I do not have the acceleration of the 5W.
A 5W-40 would be excellent for me, but it is not available at any price through Mobil distributors, so I am probably going to try a blend in a month or so of 5W-30 and 5W-50.
My oil change interval is 3,000 miles.
P.S. I switched back to my Toyota air filter as the K&N was definitely letting in too much smog and contamination. I only use it when going to the cleaner mountains. Do not like this, as the Toyota filter chokes my engine, but then again, I am only doing city driving most of the time.

I don't feel the stock filter choke my engine. There just isn't enough oxygen to burn. I think a supercharger may be the best solution. TRD doesn't make one for my RX300 and I don't want to go aftermarket. My RX300 just gradually lose some power as I gain altitude up to 14,300 feet. That's higher than most small airplanes normally fly.

Harrier,
Well, I burn gas by the bucket loads at my altitude. I have gotten my RX over 15,000 on one of the nearby mountains, but had to avoid using the K&N because there was too much dust kicked up by other cars. I think keeping the air filter clean is key at this altitude.
