Used RX300 or new Highlander? Other questions...
Hi all, new poster here.
So I'm *considering* purchasing either a used RX300 or a new Toyota Highlander for my wife for Christmas. Do any of you have any insights for me in things to look out for, options to make sure I get, etc? She currently drives a 1999 Saturn SL2, so either would be a big step up (but I'm sure she would prefer the Lexus over the two).
I've been looking at 2000 4x4 models in the 30,000 - 40,000 mile range. I test drove one and it was very nice. I drive a BMW 3 series and I noticed many similar options and attention to detail. I love my BMW, but it has been a maintenance pain in the butt for sure! It's a love hate relationship. I'll probably eventually switch back to Toyota or Lexus if I can afford it.
Anyway, any information you could provide me with would be most helpful. I'm hoping to get a 2000 model with 30-40K miles in excellent shape for around $24K, think this is possible? The main dealer where I live is several thousand above blue book retail value and I'm just not going to overpay for something.
Also, I know someone that will sell me a 2001 RX300 Silversport package with 47,000 miles for $24K. Is this a good deal or not? I can't find much info about the silversport. Miles seem a little high, but maybe the SS makes it worth it?
Thanks

You may actually find a better deal on the RX because it has been out longer and there are more used cars on the market. The highlander is basically the same platform without the Lexus extras. Have had a '99 rx for over a year now we really love it. Great on road manners and the awd is more than adequate for very deep snow(Michelin CT's made a night and day difference)

Prefer RX
I'd prefer the RX for sure, but I'm actually finding the opposite of your post. I thought now was the best time to buy but really can't find a good deal on one. My local Lexus dealer has 9 of them, but is several thousand over bluebook value.
I'm still curious about that 2001 SS edition with 47K miles for 24K. Kelley Blue Book says it's only worth $23K, but Edmunds and Nada say it's more like 26K.

I'd definitely go for the used RX over the new Highlander.
I moved up from a '95 Saturn SL2 to a '02 RX300 about 1 1/2 years ago. I really like some of the features and layout differences the RX300 has over the Highlander.
It did take a few weeks to get used to driving the RX300 after the SL2 and I still miss the SL2's better visibility in parallel parking. Of course, there are a lot of things in the SL2-to-RX300 transition that were gained that more than compensate.
It sounds like you know what you're looking for. As was previously mentioned, there are suposed to be a lot of RX300's coming off of lease, but maybe not in your area.

Good price
Thanks for the posts guys.
I think I found a good deal at a Lexus dealer just out of town. 2001 RX300 29,000 miles loaded except without moonroof, heated seats, and spoiler. He is going to add in heated seats and offered this at $24,900. Not bad for a dealer price. This did not include certification.
I'm going to call him back and at least try and get him to split the certification cost with me. My only complaint really is that the car had a smokey smell, but I'm pretty sure we could get that out since we're non-smokers.
Anyway wish me luck.

Domino,
FYI, 2004 Highlander has an updated engine/transmition (3.3l 230hp 5 speeds) same as RX330.
Highlander is always roomier, and the new 2004 is more powerful and better gas mileage.
RX is more comfortable and luxury.
I will take new Highlander over used RX3000. You just can beat the new car smell and you has full warrentee. and know full history for the car.
If you can shell out more money, get a RX330
Depends on what your needs are both highlander and RX are great cars. You won't go wrong with both.

You may want to reconsider your purchase if you have not already done so. I'm with Sam (o8yb), you can't beat the NCS, especially when the vehicle you're considering smells like cig smoke. Furthermore, you did not mention how your wifey would feel about a new vs. pre-owned vehicle. If you think you can't afford a new RX, consider a lease or purchasing an 02 or 03. Price probably comparable to the highlander. The Lexus quality is far superior to the highlander (with all respect to the highlander).
Whatever your decision, good luck!

Thanks for the ideas guys and I hear you about the new car smell.
I just bought an RX300 -- I found a different one with almost the same miles without the smoke smell. Got the CPO 100K warranty and everything at a heckuva price. I think she'll be thrilled with it and I know she would prefer a Lexus over a Toyota.
Now I'm thinking I might get myself one of those Toyota Solara's.

congratulations.
One word of advice. Be sure to change the oil regularly and have it documented. Toyota made a production change in the 3L v6 in 2002 due to the sludge issues. The main problems were a lot of owners were not changing their oil til it was too late.

Re: Yes
Just curious, how much did you pay and what state are you in?
