On a related note, the upcoming F80 M4 will have more than 425hp and more than 370lb-ft of torque :

I know that BMW under-rates its engines but this seems like a serious misstep by BMW considering the RC-F's V8 makes 450hp...

BMW claims huge weight savings for M4 - around 3250-3350lbs.
Less focus on HP, more focus on handling / driving dynamics.

Just a way to make more money
I much rather have a V8 though, cylinder count is much more important then pure power.

One wonders how a high boost highly stressed tri-turbo engine (3L to generate 425+hp) would hold up under repeated laps of a track without overheating. The Lexus RC-F normal aspirated V8 almost certainly will be bulletproof under those conditions considering that the Lexus LFA V10 can run repeated laps with its oil temp not budging an inch.

but yup, bmw is good at underrating their engines. the new m5/6 is rated at 560hp, but end up someone dyno at 577hp AT THE WHEELS

Most certainly not. The displacements might be the same but the two engines will be very different.
As far as power goes the last M3 had 414 hp and 295 lb-ft, weighed 3600 lbs yet managed a 0-60 time somewhere between 4.2 and 4.5 sec range. This new M3/M4 apparently is supposed to have nearly 100 more lb-ft than the previous engine as well as more hp along with this new cars increase use of carbon fiber. I wouldn't be surprised to see a ~420+ hp M3/M4 with a weight in the 3400-3500 range. That along with a 7-speed DCT could produce acceleration runs in the high 3 sec range.

The M3 has never been about having the most HP, its always been about the best balance. These peak HP quoting posts are really getting funny. The E36 here had a whopping 240hp compared to the Euro model that had over 300 and the E36 was BY FAR the best in class and one of the best in the world.
Even the E90 etc never had the grunt of the C63 etc with less torque but arguably was the best driving in class.
If the M3 loses weight, keeps a nice high revving redline and can be modded for more power I honestly am perplexed how anyone could be upset with 420 or so hp.

The only issue the entire day was one car blew out a tire which was worn out. The cars were bulletproof and that left one hell of an impression.
