Default 4GS owner - got an RC F (originally wanted an M4)

Got this RC F last week. Ultra white with Circuit red leather interior. Navi/ML, LED headlights, 19's.

I came from a GS350 F-Sport and surprisingly I appreciate the GS a lot more now. What the RC F is, the GS isn't and what the GS is, the RC F isn't.

I originally wanted an M4 but the story is funny. I brought in my GS for service and scheduled an appointment with the BMW dealer the same day. I got an RC350 loaner. Got to BMW and they told me I couldn't test drive the car because someone put a deposit on it. They only had one. They also decided to tell me they just got an M3 in but I couldn't test drive it either because "it would eventually be someone's car".

Left the dealer after 10 minutes. Loaned the RC to a friend who has owned some very nice cars (Porsche/Ferrari) and he said the car was good and drove similarly to the E90/E92 M3's he owned in the past.

I decided then to consider the RC F. The rest is history

Holly cow, that was pretty dang rude of BMW! Totally get the car with a deposit, but not letting you drive the M3. Of course it will sell. Every car on their lot will eventually be someone's car. Did they think you were a tire kicker or time waster or are they that way to everyone.? In the grand scheme of things, an M3 is neither expensive nor exclusive and and you could easily walk into a Porsche dealership and jump in a $145k 991.2 S4 if they believed you were for real..

Congrats nonetheless. Enjoy your new car!

Congrats on the new addition!

Reminds me of my time at a BMW dealership... I waked in and strolled casually for 15 in and out of cars and no one helped me so I walked back to my car. Once they saw me get into a GS they ran over and asked me if I needed any help. I told him I wanted to look at the 550 and POSSIBLY a CPO M5. He then said oh... Hit a left over there and go look at the cars in the preowned lot. He then sat back down.

Salesman prequalify a buyer when they first enter the dealership, given they didn't first see your car. If they sense you are able and capable to afford their brand, they will talk to you. Then if you are wishy washy in your tone, especially wants to test drive a high performance vehicle, they will discount you and reject your advance to waste 1-2 hours of their day. It's all about probability of selling when their pay is mostly commission. Unfortunately age, race and attire play a huge role in the luxury car market. Some of us dress too casual when car shopping or look too young, myself included. That's the main explanation for op's experience and unfortunate loss of sale for judging a book by its cover. These things never happen if walked into a Hyundai dealer

You should go back in your RC F, drive around the lot long enough to be sure that they've seen it, then test drive the M4 just to waste their time.

I purposely dress casual when car shopping and I'm usually prequalified

Nah, just roll the window down & ask: "You people work on commission, right?"
