I use PS-CS6. No real tricks or anything, just reproduce what I think the background is.
Cut n paste, fading things together, and then freehand (mainly the wavy texture on the blue thing)

More bells and whistles that I rarely use, and the interface is a bit different. Don't get me wrong, CS6 is definitely advanced quite a bit, but I don't claim to be a "professional" level user that can wring all the benefits out of it. As far as basics, still pretty much the same.
It's got a bunch of 3D stuff I haven't even bothered trying to figure out.

Yeah, I'm far from being a professional level user as well. I probably only know how to use a very small fraction of Photoshop's vast capabilities. For most of what I do here (on CL) 7.0 is more than adequate for me. If I were to upgrade it'd probably be to do photo editing, like color correction and stuff like that.
