Default Engine of all engines (calling all engine experts)

Hello I'm a newbie when it comes to the internals of an engine.

So I have this question:
What do you look for in an engine to know it has potential to grow? As in what specs are desirable for an engine to have in order to be modded/built?Achieve the max gains!

Thanks in advance. Comparison to x50 engines would be great too

It might not be the engine itself. Could be the vehicle's chassis, could be the tuning ability, etc etc. The place to start is looking at the available aftermarket for said motor/vehicle. Depending on what you're looking to do could determine what vehicles you narrow down to your "final list".

I think if you are planning to go forced induction, the most important part is block strength and availability of aftermarket internals to dial in compression ratio and strengthen to take the abuse
