Default Valve cover seals and gaskets

How do you replace the seals in the valve cover that goes around the spot the spark plugs passes through to seat into the head?

It looks as though there is a plate that is riveted in that secures them in. There are also little tabs around the opening that keeps the seal in place. The actual seal itself is stiff and will not go around these small tabs.

Am I suppose to remove the rivets to take that plate off and then rivet it back into place once I replace those seals?
