Is a 2JZ-GTE swap truly worth it? Your thoughts are appreciated.

We're not talking about SC's in this thread. We're weighing the options / cost / value of doing a GTE swap vs building an NA-T. There is a reason Toyota used different hardware in the GTE vs. the GE. If the rods and pistons were basically the same...why wouldn't they use them across the board with all the engines??? Because GE's were not designed to handle boost. And as much as you guys think you know, you do NOT know better than Toyota engineers.

however your blanket statement still regarding the meritts of a na motor vs gte are untrue with the exception being vvti ge's to some extent...

Im on this boat too i have 185000 on my 95 SC 2JZGE engine (running great still) and starting to think a GTE swap would be my best bet?, since labor like rebuilding and head gasket swap would be about the same amount of labor for me.

I recently had my 94 supra totaled...although I lost my baby I still have her heart and plan to implant it into my recently purchased 98 GS300. My gte has 1000cc injectors,62-1 turbonetics turbo (supra had twin walboros),vpc, gcc,Neo afc,hks DLI,aeromotive FPR and a ross racing fuel rail and stock tranny with HP cooler. From my vantage point obviously the swap is definately worth it. I will be sending out the Supra and Lexus harnesses to Phoenix Tuning to try and make this a plug and play operation. Any advice and or knowledge will be more than appreciated.

Its taken me 3 days to read this entire thread page by page and im still debating NA-T or GTE swap. I got a 98 GS300 so I am thankful about the wiring being easy. BUT regarding NA-T I do not hear much about the stock transmission holding up. How much power, stress and abuse can this take on a NA-T setup?

But is it worth it in the long run to go for a cheap kit ?
There is so much that can be sacrificed with quality in terms of price.
Now if the quality is not so great, that would also be reflected in the price.

The HG they sell is pretty good. especially if you're going to lower the compression. People get their HG kits and boost their motors to 350-400 hp all the time.

Damn! This thread has me all confused now too! Lol! So many people think that going NA-T is better. I tend to think it depends on the mileage of the motor in the car. I've got a GS400 though and swapping it was my plan or buying another IS300 and swapping it. I'd rather not buy a GS300 to do the swap since I am the second owner of my car and it is clean and decent miles 135 ish. Maybe I'll buy the IS and turbo it though I hate tuning and standalones! Plus I've got one of those cars already( 450whp Turbo MR2)! I guess I'll just keep thinking about it for a while.

I've had all 3 setups, NA-T, 2JZGTE, and 2JZGTE VVTI. By far the GTE VVTI is the best setup. For $1800 you get a strong trans that will hold 500 RWHP and will shift fast and hard unlike the stock GS300 trans, you gett he complete GTE moor with the nice intake manifold, fuel system good for 450 RWHP, turbos good for 400-450 rwhp. Then you can sell your stock motor / trans / harness to recover some cash and your car will rpobably resell for more later / easier with the GTE motor.Go GTE VVTI.

I used to own a 1st gen aristo with the GTE and it was good!! I now have the GTE VVT-I in my 2GS and am thoroughly pleased with it. I believe that it is up to the individual and how much money the individual wants to spend. For me I prefer the GTE over NA-T. But if I had a good amount of money and didnt want to swap engines and enjoyed building up an NA-T, I wouldnt hesitate giving it a shot. But one thing is for sure, it would have to be a VVT-I. They seem to have a little bit more torque IMHO. Maybe its just my butt dyno too LOL. To each his own right??
