2002 GS300 rough idle when hot
Wow, what an awesome forum and thread. My 2002 GS300 was doing exactly as stated in this thread. Running perfectly when cold, but once it warmed up, it would idle like it wanted to die. Got on ebay and purchased a used OCV for $50. Installed yesterday and car is now running like a champ again. Thanks to everyone for the great writeups and the pictures were very very helpful. It only took about 15 min to repair. BTW my GS300 has 203k miles.

65K more miles and you'll be near me! :-)
The Dealers (Stealers) wont fess up to these being simple repairs...once the VVTi code is thrown, they want to sell you on a new VVTi pulley, or cam shaft sensors (major work taking out the cams). And this has got to be one of the fastest easiest fixes possible.
My prob is last year the seats gave out...they held up really good til about 240K miles, then some small cracking, then at 250-255K miles they split pen, same with the center arm rest.
The engine in these cars will outlast the rest. And my OCV lasted well past the 200K mark also.

P1349 VVT System Malfunction (Bank 1b) blocked oil control valve filter
Vehicle Lexus GS300 / Aristo V300 JSZ161 2JZ-GTE 1997 114,000kms fault code P1349 B1 due to blocked oil control valve filter
Part required 15678-46020 2JZGTE..JZS161; 2JZGE..JZS160..5FC 1 $5.61
Remove filter and clean with compressed air / fuel / brake cleaner or similar screen should be clear
This filter is 100% blocked
VVTi Oil control valve filter location OCV
Toyota originally introduced the VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing - intelligent) as a revolutionary design that increases engine torque and output while addressing environmental issues. By adjusting the intake valve opening timing according to the engine speed, more oxygen is supplied through the air intake valve as more fuel is injected into the combustion chamber. Power and torque is maximised due to larger scale combustion. This optimised fuel to air ratio ensures the air-fuel mixture is combusted more thoroughly.
The VVT-i portion of the system continuously varies intake valve timing throughout the rev range by hydraulically rotating the camshaft relative to its drive gear.

No need to buy a new filter, clean that one. Its billet Aluminum and SS screen... :-)
If problem persists, its most likely the OCV Valve solenoid going bad. Again, super easy fix.

So great to have these forums when something goes wrong. At first, I tried going the cheapest route by cleaning the filter, but it wasn't clogged at all. So after plugging the battery back up and letting the car warm up, the engine light came back on.
Today, I decided to just go pick up the OCV from a dealership. The guy at Lexus actually did me a favor and beat the price by like $10 from what Toyota were going to charge. The part is so easy to swap, it only takes about 5 minutes to do.
Thanks for the posts above guys!

Coincidentally, my check engine light turns on after taking a 50 mile road trip late last night. I thought I was going to be stranded. My light goes away today but I did have a friend run the code. P1349 is what I know I can just clean it, but I am going to order a new replacement from Lexus tomorrow. Great thread!

VSC LIGHTS OFF AND VSC LIGHT COMES ON.......MY LEXUS GS300 RUN FINE WHEN EGINE IS COLD. HOWEVER, THE CAR IDLE WHEN ENGINE WARMS/AT REG.TEMPERATURE, STUDER, NO PICKUP POWER, AND WANTS TO DIE. TOOK MY GS300 TO PEP-BOYS AND THEY CHECKED THE ENGINE, CODE WAS: " P1346 VVT SENSOR CIRCUIT RANGE FAULT/PERFORMANCE BANK 1. P1349 VVT SYSTEM FAULT
BANK 1 " PEP-BOYS WANTS TO CHARGE ($474.60, 9690163 TO REMOVE & REPLACE VALVE TIMING CONTROL ASSEMBLY.) THAT'S FREAKING CRAZY $$$!
AFTER READING JASON T'S THREAD AND GRAPHICALLY POSTING THE ENGINE DIAGRAMS. NOW I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT TO REPLACE ON MY GS300.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE USEFUL INFO. EVERYONE! JASON T!

replaced driver side OCV but was not able to get to other one on passenger side. Took it for a spin and no CEL. Car runs fine now!!! Question: is it necessary to replace both? The passenger side OCV is fine but the car is now at 161k and it's inevitable that it will soon fail. I want to return the passenger side OCV to dealership because it's expensive and don't want it laying around.
