Who's running a TH400 or powerglide?
for those of you running domestic trannies how did you mate them up to the 2JZ?
i've seen two different techniques:
a) using a complete domestic tranny (standard small block chevy bellhousing) along with a bellhousing adapter (bolts between the tranny bellhousing and the motor) and a custom flywheel... this method allows the use of "standard" converters just like you'd use if you had a TH400 + 350ci chevy... (ie. the converters are cheap and plentiful)...
b) using a TH400 case with a special front pump and adapter to mate the 400 case to a toyota A340E tranny bellhousing... this method uses a toyota flywheel but requires a custom converter (TH400 rear, toyota front)...
so the question is a) which way did most people go? b) if starting from scratch and converting to one of these trannies, which car would be best to start with, auto SC3 or manual? on the one hand, these trannies act like "manuals" in the sense that they don't need/use any computer control so the manual tranny ECU would be a good match... on the other hand, starting with the auto tranny SC3 would provide you with the bellhousing/flywheel (assuming you're using approach "b" above)...
any comments are welcomed (besides "you suck", that is)

Just a first impression...
If the AT and MT are the same price, I would start with a MT and buy a cheap AT for the bellhousing, and go with (a). Less trouble.
If the MT is significantly more expensive, I would start with a AT, sort out the ECU issues (not too hard, I gotta do this for my 400), and away you go.
Another thing to think about will be your driveshaft length.

Fred,
so it appears that you're doing a TH400... which mounting method are you using?
the other "issue" is that several people have told me that with method (a) you need to bash/cut the tranny tunnel and possibly move the pedals due to the larger domestic TH400 bellhousing... plus the adapter + custom flywheel (a) comes in at about $1500... the front pump + adapter method (b) is more like $450...
are you doing a custom job or are you using somebody else adapter plate/housing?
thanks for the response!

Jeff, ahh no I didn't mean TH400, I meant SC400 (well, actually V8 Soarer). I am putting in a R154 out of a MA70 Supra turbo. The SC4/Soarer never came with a manual ECU, so I have to fool the auto one into thinking the standard auto is still there. Not too hard.
I am getting my bellhousing over here from a place called Castlemaine Rod Shop. http://www.crs.com.au Unfortunately, I don't think he does anything for the JZ engines.

TH400...or the Glide?
Actually either one would work great ,and there are some drag racers already doing it w/ Supra's. Power House Racing makes and sells the adaptor plates for the TH400 bell housing to the back of the 2JZ-GTE block! I was going to use the power glide, because my father is an old school Drag racer. He has like 13 powereglides in the back of the garage. But I have decided to go with the 6 spd. instead, I want to do other things with the car other than drag race. My personal opinion, stall converter cars are no fun to drive?....my .02 cents.....

everybody has a different preference, but the best thing i ever did was convert my 6-speed camaro to a TH400 w/transbrake... every launch is perfect and requires no effort... the car runs faster in the 1/4 because the 60' is so much better and because you never drop power... you're under boost for the entire pass... in addition to that, you are much less likely to brake parts... and the car is safer because the suspension is "set" the whole way down the track, vs. the harsh pitching that occurs on a manual shift...
I'm selling my camaro now (see http://members.***.net/blownz if anyone is interested in a 9 second car) and I'm looking to build a drag SC300... i've got the supra for cruising and road racing, i want to show the nova/chevelle/etc. boys at the local track what an 8 second Lexus looks like :-)

come on guys!! i still have not been able to get in touch with any SC3/4 owners that are running a TH350/400 or powerglide... i tried emailing the "missouri boys" but never got a response... i'm mainly interested to know what sort of tranny tunnel mods were needed to make this fit... in particular, i've heard that different years of SC3 had different tunnels... i haven't yet settled on a car so if the model year makes a difference i *need* to know... i don't mind a little hammer-bangin' but i don't want to have to relocate the pedal assembly or anything...
anyone!?
thanks!
