Post Rear main seal leak

Hey,
We have a leak from where the transmission meets the engine. I believe its leaking from the rear main seal. I contacted my local lexus dealer and they quoted me $750-900 to replace the seal. Have any of you guys experienced a problem like this? And if so, is there a cheaper way to fix it?
Thanks.

Default rear main seal

Had same problem. Took it to Toyota dealer instead of Lexus. Paid less than $400. Im thinking it was actually just $280 for this becuase I also had something else done at the same time. Check there first. At the Toyota service place where I go they have 2 techs that work on Toyota but hten all Lexus vehicles that come in. Great experience for me.

Default LOL

i had the same problem with my SC400 a week after i go it.

i had to drop the trans, and pull the rear seal plate off and install a new seal and reinstall the trans.

The labor for this SUCKS! the seal was like $20-30 from lexus and about 8 hours of labor. call a transmissin shop (yes a trans shop) they do the R&R for trans cheaper than a regular mechanic and have it done in a few hours. while your there change the transmission pump seal also, its easy.

or if you got plenty of tools, and a damn good small impact gun for the upper trans bolts, they are ussually siezed .

Make sure to bring in your new torque converter, so they can install it free when they put it all back together!!!

The rear main seals are a common high mileage failure items. And 8 hours is book labor to replace.

yea about 8 hours (more really) for a regular mechanic, but the trans shop by my house can do it in about 2.5 hours. i had they rebuild my trans, it took him about an hour to drop the trans, and an hour to reinstall it, trans shops drop trans so much that they do it real quick

trans R&R was like under $200

took my like 8+ hours, next time ill just take it to the trans shop.

Just wanted to say welcome to the club GOLDsc and thanks chairman for the suggestion of a tranny shop. Maybe I'll get that done now. My dealer usually quotes me $750-900 for the leak every time I have my oil changed. Too much.

Should I go ahead and buy the rear main seal and the transmission pump seal from Lexus and bring it to the tranny shop?

Default yea

yea Pianoman72 thats the best way to do it. bring your own LEXUS parts. My advise is drop by if you see your car on the rack to see the progress, then again when there about to install it, it pisses them off, but you make sure its being done, thats why i rather do it myself, but the trans R&R is a pain, i rather pay the $200 from now on.
