will a check engine light for a knock sensor retard timing on a 92. Also the car is a 92 5 speed with a 94 auto ecu. It's my understanding that 92 had no egr temp sensor. So I deleted it. Could the check engine light be caused by the 94 ecu looking for a temp signal. After reading the code it only comes up as 55

I ran across this thread looking for something else but see no one answered your question. Yes, the 55 code will retard timing. From what I have been told on here, the timing retards from something like 20 to about 12. It is doing it's job, if it can't tell if the engine is knocking it will assure it doesn't. Check the sensor, if it is bad replace it with a genuine OEM one, I tried the cheaper alternatives and it still threw the code and replaced with a Toyota sensor and it cleared and the power came back to normal.

Thank you I ended up finding a bent pin on the ecu. Much more power now though it's inconsistent
