Question Flowmaster exhaust?

currently i'm going through the same thing i'm sure many lex owners go through. i'm trying to figure out which exhaust company i want to go with. i know there are many out there such as borla greddy flowmaster dynamax etc... however i haven't been around such systems enough to know what would really sound good on my car (93 sc300).

i recently heard the 40 series delta flow flowmasters on their website and they sounded pretty good.... i also had though about getting a custom pipe made from the cat back then hooking the mufflers up to that...then possibly a high flow cat or something.... what do you guys recommend?

Flowmasters are chambered, OEM is not. My advice is to stick w/ the type of exhaust OEM has. Dynomax is the most common way to go, using their ultra flo's- no chambers.

They sound sweet on a Mustang and Camaro, but don't sound that great on a Lexus. Have you heard them yet on a Lexus? They drone pretty bad and don't sound smooth AT ALL!!! I've known 2 people to get them, then remove them, on a lexus (1 was a GS and the other was a LS).

I don't think the OEM manifold was designed for the reflection wave created w/ a chambered muffler. You might want to do some research first before spending the cash.

Just a heads up on the info there- good luck.

What about Magnaflows? Hear anything about these? They make a 3" offset/offset polished stainless muffler that looks like a drop in replacement...

Magnaflows are very popular on the SC's, just make sure you get the straight through muffler, and not the "classic" chambered ones. I personally haven't heard them buy have heard others complimenting them.

3" is too big for a 400, BTW. 2.5" is ideal and 2.25" being stock.

Yeah, but dual 3" isn't too big for a car that will eventually have a 4" downpipe attached to a T88H or SP74.

Some sound clips: http://www.intellexual.net/faq.html

Watch out for the FAQ in late June, I will have many many more sound clips of exhausts when I come back from the Carson Meet on the 21st.

Hmmm... not positive on the 300s but on the 400s stock piping size is 50mm (1.97"). 2.125" is probably ideal but not available. 2.25" is a very good choice with 2.5" being too big for most dual applications.

Pass on the flowmasters. They sound good on big V8s but are VERY un-Lexus-like. Dynomax, Magnaflow and others are better choices.

BTW, chambered mufflers are fine as long as they flow enough to not create backpressure. Properly sized Walker Dynomax Superturbos work just fine and are affordable at under $40 each.

Does anyone know if the 3" Offset/ offset Summit Stainless polished mufflers are chambered? Clint has 4 of these (I think). They can't suck that bad. I was thinking of getting these. They're cheap, like $75 each. Any feedback on the Summit stainless mufflers appreciated.

The Summit units are not chambered, if we are thinking about the same thing. But I would call to verify.

Question

So now after reading the various posts, I can see that the flowmasters aren't really recommended for a Lexus. However, I saw that Dynomax was mentioned a few times...and now that the Dynomax Ultra Flo Welded and SS are on sale, it makes me want to buy them more. That leads me to questions about the rest of the exhaust however. Once I buy new mufflers, I'll need pipe from the cat back (can anyone recommend somewhere to buy this?). Also, I'm wondering if I should all together take out the cat and put in pipe to increase flow, or buy a high flow...then there is the litle tid bit I saw on Lex400SC's FAQ. It mentions the SC300 having three cats...I was under the impression it only had one before the pipe splits... maybe I'm just not fully understanding how my exhaust works. Can anyone help me out with all this?
