Default clutch opinions

i was hoping that some of you can post experiences that you've had with the clutchmasters stage 3 and 4 clutches. i'm planing on buying one but am worried about the streetability of the clutch. my boy firends supra has a hks twin disk clutch and the engagement on his clutch is so harsh i can't stand driving his car anymore. i'm planing on doing the 2jzgte swap some time in the future and i thought that i would just buy the stage 4 in preperations for it but for the time beeing my car is pretty much stock with a slipping clutch that needs replacing. if i don't get the 2jzgte swap then i will be planing on a bolt on turbo kit for a secondary tuning route. either which way i will need to have a decent clutch that will handle the power. so please post opinions and experiences you've had with the stage 4 clutchmasters clutch. and thanks for all the help in advance

I'm not too keen on ClutchMasters clutches, but I suppose they're pretty good. As far as the HKS Twin Disk is concerned, it's notorious for harsh engagement. I would actually look into RPS, they really seem to know their stuff for 2JZ applications, although they're $$$.

Also, you might be able to get a great deal on an ACT clutch and Fidanza flywheel package here:

But CM is good too, I just prefer ACT. Here is a package for CM and Fidanza:

I can tell you fthat my RPS experience was not very good. The 6spd guys recommend the RPS, but I cannot. 2.25 60ft times, clutch doesn't bite well when doing a 5000rpm drop, Is very marginal in the 400-450 lbs/ft range of torque. On several occasions the disc wouldn't grab after an aggressive launch. I'd rev to 5000-5500rpm at the line, get a halfway decent 60ft time only to have the clutch slip on the 1-2 and 2-3 shift. Once bad enough to the point where the car would barely move, I thought an axle had broken.

I'm in the process of trying the ACT pressure plate which has 35% increase in clamping force over stock. The RPS plate for the 5spd is supposed to be 10% stiffer than stock. I'm also going with the Horsepowerfreaks 6 puck bronze sprung disc. It's supposed to be suitable for cars with 700+rwhp, so it should hold. They also say it is slippable with minimal chatter. We'll see. I hear good things about the Clutchmasters stage 3 or 4 for the 5spd, with the exception of Jeff (SC300TURBO), whos Clutchmasters double diaphragm disc exploded when running slicks.

Wish I had better news for 5spd owners, but there currently is no magic bullet.

Here is what I think.

If you are going to be getting a racing clutch of any sort ... that means you are planning on making POWER. Making power is going to mean harsh engagement .... that is what these clutches are for ....

I have a 5 speed. I bought the cheapest *racing* clutch I could find. It is pretty harsh, but very very streetable.... it is made by Clutchnet (most people have never heard of them) ... and it handles my 511rwhp very very nicely I was very surprised, I figured it would slip, but it is nothing but fun.

Not really. I have a centerforce state 1 in mine, and it turns just fine. Holds 30 percent more and as long as you use a Toyota throwout bearing, you will not have chirp. 175 from Nopi. If you need pics and a how to, let me know.

Yeah, but 30% more capacity than stock is way too polite for even small turbos. Most boosted 5spds will need a clutch that holds 2-3 times more torque than the stock one. Most turbos are running 350lbs/ft of torque or more. I would guess the stock 5spd clutch handles 250lbs/ft at best.

Looks nice, but I didn't see any 2JZ-GE applications for our 5spd.
