Default which torsen lsd is this...Not mkiv auto tt

Hello, from what gathered the first photo is the auto tt torsen lsd and the second photo is torsen lsd as well. I couldnt find anymore details of second photo torsen lsd other than: 10 bolt ring gear, 49 teeth when you spin driveline both axle stubs rotate in same directions.

Pic 2 should be a Torsen t-2. Count the teeth on the pinion gear
49 on ring and 13 on the pinion =3.76
49. 15. =3.266

Thanks for responding. Yes, counted 13 on the pinion. Do you have anymore information of it, t-2? What year motor etc came with it?

Did more digging, according to http://planetsoarer.com/diff/diff.htm

Torsen I - Z30 Soarer, early A80 Supra - if one wheel is in the air then it will spin freely. Handbrake will transfer torque to wheel with grip.

Torsen II - late A80 Supra, Z40 Soarer - has bias plate in middle torque delivered to both wheels even if one is in the air. May cause chatter during slow tight turns.

^^ Those T-2's are very rare in the USA. I don't believe MKIV's got them even in 1996, 1997 and 1998 models. Common in Japan though. I can attest to the one-wheel-in-the-air spin with a common Torsen T-1. That happened to me negotiating a U-turn (at near idle speed) on a bumpy mountain pass once. Otherwise it's a great LSD but the T-2 is better since it mitigates that issue.

Yes thanks for confirming.

Member Blizzy on lextreme (http://www.lextreme.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7745) refer his as torsen lsd, post #2.

It could also be T-2R torsen as well. I saw someone sold on ebay as T-2R and member RCVTR on superhawkforum (http://www.superhawkforum.com/forums...project-28537/) has it on his SC400, post #4.

I cannot be certain but I think it's possible that when Toyota put the new type of Torsen in the late model Soarer and late model MKIV it might have been the T-2R. There isn't much documentation on it.

For the JDM JZZ30, JDM UZZ31, Aristo chassis and JDM JZA80's there should have been only two Torsen variants: the common T-1 and only one version of the T-2 (whichever that was) but not three Torsen variants. I'd guess the T-2's were put in all of those models in Japan in the late 90's models into 2002 but it's not exactly clear that is what Toyota did.

I don't know enough facts to say one way or the other on the T-2 or T-2R question. There aren't any other versions of these LSDs used in other models though.

There is probably a similar case of updated Torsen LSDs with the differentials in the Chaser, Mark II, Verossa and the like although as we know those sizings are totally incompatible with the diff pumpkins we use. But since Toyota owns JTEKT who makes Torsens and own the original patents it's just my guess that T-2's gradually became phased in during the late 90's on most cars.

All the Torsens Toyota is now using, from those in the FR-S to any of the high end Lexus F models and a couple of LS460 trim levels in some markets, should be T-2's.

T-2R's also might be a special case application build per manufacturer request for a specific model. I know they are made for Mustangs for instance but they might be only part of the Ford Racing catalog as an over-the-counter part the same way the Supra TRD diff wasn't a factory original part from new.

I think Torsen T-3's are a special use case, possibly for 4WD or heavy duty AWD applications only.
