1993 sc300 5spd turbo questions
well KahnBB was kind enough to post this link to show me how to fix the tilt function on my 93 SC300. 7 months later I am ready to do it, and think I can. The big question: how to I get the clamshell off? Are there screws in there or does it just come apart? 12 pages in it was not clear to me:
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sc-...ng-repair.html
Two other things:
The rear end has a couple leaky seals. It is probably better just to replace the rear end with the 3.92 Kahn suggested. Where can I get one? Is there are parts forum here?
I'd also like a good ECM to control the turbo functions. Any idea what kind and where to get one at a reasonable cost?

Hey-- glad to help. As t2d2 said, there are three screws on the steering column cover. Those have to be removed first. One is easy and visible. Another is slightly recessed and the third is REALLY recessed. You will need a long phillips screwdriver. I can't recall if they are medium size phillips head or large phillips head.
Don't try forcing anything without removing those first. After that, there are a couple of plastic catches that have to be carefully pried to get both top and bottom halves off. Again, go easy and don't force it. You will find where they are.
I do believe there are a couple of threads here with visual examples. It's been a few years now and I can't remember what they are called, sorry , but I have used at least one such thread myself when doing my repair.
....
For your rear end, the pinion seal and two shaft seals are probably what you mean? Just replacing external seals is easier than replacing an entire diff.
I don't remember what rear end you have in your car but if you're running a turbo engine and you are still on a 4.08 or 4.27 rear then yes, a 3.92 ratio would not be a bad idea. Keep in mind that it will still be an open diff if you grab the entire pumpkin.
You can find those from any 1992-1997 SC400. Very common and not too very expensive. Direct drop-in. A 3.76 Supra TT Auto rear with the LSD is the most desired ratio with a companion flange change needed.
And we do have a classified section for our models

CatMan, I'm not sure that's correct about the flanges. I understood that the GS300, GS400, Aristo and MKIV companion flanges were the same 111mm ear spacing whereas the SC300, SC400 and Soarer companion flanges were in their own identical group with 101mm ear spacing. All of these flanges will interchange onto any of the 200mm pumpkins though and it's common to swap over an original SC flange to a GS or MKIV pumpkin.
Was there an interim change to the diff flanges to the GS300/400 series at some point late in the production cycle?

Well the steering tilt function repair was a success. I am ready for my Master Mechanic badge. Thanks to all who helped.
By the way, why was thread moved?

Generally when any thread in the main SC300/400 section has veered more into the territory of maintainence, in-depth repair or custom modification we move it to the "Performance and Maintenance" section. Same goes for suspension-related threads going into the "Suspension" section and build-threads for individuals' cars going into the "Build Thread" section.
General SC questions or discussion tend to stay in the main section.
