Default Are driveshaft U-joints supposed to be notchy?

I have one driveshaft that was rebuilt and balanced, with new U-joints installed (they sawed off the old ones and welded on servicable ones) that vibrates insane amounts in the car- so much so that it had to be returned.

I have another driveshaft currently in the car that was pulled out of a junker, and the U-joint is fairly notchy, and gives me annoying vibrations at 30-40 and 55-70, but is driveable.

Does it really matter if the joint is notchy? Or is it a matter of if it's too stiff?

And yes, new center bearings on both diffs.

Notchy/not smooth rotating u joints can cause vibration. It should move through its full range of motion without any binding. It's not ideal obviously. If the joint has play in it, I would be looking to replace that sooner than just a slightly notchy joint. It does suck that sc300 u joints are not serviceable.
