Default 3UZ-FE starter in an 1UZ-FE car?

I have a 1995 SC400. I'm doing a starter job. My car was built 4/95. There are two possible starters for the car, up to 5/95 and post 5/95. I got the pre-5/95 starter and it seems to be hitting the flywheel. I can not rotate the flywheel w/ the starter installed. Someone mentioned using a starter for a 3UZ-FE car. Anyone tried this?

Dude,

Toyota is well known for including older generation parts when transitioning into the next model variant so I would try a post 5/95 starter.

Turns out that I had the correct starter (part #), but something was wrong with its spec. I swapped the starter for another of the same one and it fit perfect. No binding issues. I gotta chalk this one up to a bum rebuilt part.

I have a 3uz starter in mine, bit more torque than the earlier ones, only difference is the plug end for the trigger wire.

I have the same year and model as you, and also need to replace the starter assembly. And you're right-there are 2 different starters. How did you determine when your car was built? I put in my year/model on LexusPartsNow and it showed 2 options. I put in my VIN and it gave me this: Lexus Part No.: 28160-54071. Is this correct, or did you use a different PN for the 3UZ-FE? And where did you get it if you don't mind sharing?

Thanx.

Look under the hood at the emissions sticker put on by the factory. It will have year and month built.
