Driveshaft question!
Does the SC400 have center support bearing? Have
very slight vibration and seems it could be a
driveshaft problem. Any experience with driveshaft problems or repair appreciated.

I have completely re-done my transmission.
I had a vibration as well and turned out to be the 2 rubber couplings that support the shaft. I also had a bad tranny mount.
All of these parts can be expensive, so if you want to buy them cheaper, go to:

You get the parts for 10% under dealer price and shipped to your door. They have most in stock.

Drive Shaft Assembly
When I took my SC 400 to the dealer today, I told them that I was hearing an intermittent clicking sound coming from the center consule area, when I decelerate at the speeds between 25 and 32. The sound goes away on acceleration. They checked it out and informed me that it was a bearing in the drive shaft assembly, $1100, to install a new drive shaft because they did not have much luck at rebuilding the assembly. I have searched this site and it seems that this is not a common problem. Any thoughts on delaying having this fixed?

IF you do have a bearing gone in the driveline it is not something you can ignore or delay in rectifying, I would get a second opinion though just to be sure.
Should it be a worn bearing do you have any driveline specialists who could replace the bearing and rebalance the shaft, that could work out a lot cheaper than 1100 bucks.

Thanks, I went and got a second opinion, they said almost the same as the dealer, but that they would try and rebuild, but that I would be the one taking the chance if it did not work, like the dealer they said not much luck with rebuilding. So, I spent the money with the dealer and put in a new driveshaft.

whats ur mileage?
how come rebuilding does not work, I think its in the dealers and independent shops best interest to make you buy a new one. When I hear things like that, "you have to buy a new one", thats sometimes BS only cuz someone wants to make a killing cuz u drive a lexus.

No, I do not think it is normal problem for these cars. Looking over this site I did see a couple of complaints that were similar to mine that could have been the same problem.

Back in the "good old days" you could replace any U/J on a propshaft simply by removing the circlips and stripping out the needle roller bearings, then we moved to "staked" U/J's and central rubber mounted bearings. Most times the rubber mounted bearing is near impossible to replace but the staked joints can often be reamed out and a normal U/J fitted, saves a lot of money on the cost of a new shaft and no dealer is going to offer you this alternative.

THIS HAPPENED TO MY 1999 SC400. I kept the old driveshaft, so I know that it was the problem.
Irontoad.com carries a Factory OEM driveshaft for your car for around $800.00
You can also purchase a used one from www.car-parts.com for around $200.00
I was getting a whirling sounding noise from my center consol upon deceleration.

So i guess after putting a new shaft you don't hear the noise any more? My car has had this noise at 50 Kmiles and i am affraid it needs a new shaft too. I looked in Car-part.com and they list the rear and the front. Which one is it that causes the noise?
What with the quality of these Lexuses.

Well my 99 model has over 120,000 miles. Yes it did stop the noise competely.
You don't have a 4 wheel drive car, so you won't need a Front Driveshaft.
Just the rear.
