Exaclty what I am trying to do....V160 cost a lot more than most think to do......by the time you buy tranny for 4-5k, plus twin disc clutch for 2k, Custom driveshaft 600-1k.....its easily can run you upwards of 8k-12k for the swap..
R154 can be done for about half the cost and dont need as much custom work to do it....
Anyone running a OS-Giken twin on the r154?

I am able to source either tripod or non-tripod JDM r154 from a 1jzgte......I have the ability to go to the engine importer in person and actually see which one I would like to choose....btw I was told $1500 for the tranmission but that includes shifter, oem clutch and pressure plate, 1jzgte flywheel, maybe even a possibility the front half of driveshaft as well..
IMO wouldnt it be easier to start with the r154 that is designed for the car...
Would eliminate the cost of the 1jz bellhousing, shifter extension....since it will already have it

I don;t know about the steel center vs the aluminum center for power holding. Not even sure it even plays into the power holding you know cause the failure point on these transmissions is the thrust washers or the gear selectors etc.. not the case snapping in pieces generally speaking.
IF you have a chance to get a r154 from a 1jz I would consider going that route tripod or no tripod. they will both have all the right stuff and if the non tripod is from a soarer it will also fit without mods and have the right bellhousing. price sounds good as well.

If you don't mind the older style shifter and instead want the transmission made for your car that takes the least number of changes to get installed, go for it. It was made for your car.
Also, if a genuine Soarer 5-speed shifter comes with the early R154 that is a unique part as well. It's very similar to the SC3 5-speed shifter but has a different part number and should have a slightly different swan bend.

Exedy is garbage on V160 , doesn't hold a decent TQ so i am sure it will be the same scenario with the R154 version.
If you gonna spend the money to buy a Twin disc for your R154, i think you should look into buying a V160...Cheaper and more reliable at the end.

I've been weighing out all my options, r154, cd009, bmw getrag, and v160.
Also sometimes the more simple straight forward solution can be the better one even if it's more expensive. My previous v160 swap went very smoothly with the right parts.

By the time you get and r154 and a twin disk clutch you will probably be right around 3000-3500
Still cheaper than v160 as most of them go for 4000-4500....and that doesnt include clutch...6 speed tunnel, custom driveshaft...etc...
R154 is a more realistic option for me than V160....with the R154 I would still be able to do Supra TT diff....and still be under the cost of V160
Plus I dont really plan on going above 600hp....which R154 should handle no problem
A Soarer R154 is the only direct bolt in as well for SC....

I paid 1050 bnib for the exedy I have spoken to several people who actually have this same clutch on the r154 and its rated for approximately 750 rwhp and close to 600trq which is about the limits of the r154 and can handle some light duty drag racing..i wanted to get a twin disk with exceptional street manors and speaking to those who have it ,all endorse it inclusive of my own tuner who has first hand experience with clutches alpha..
Exedy does make a carbon version as well as triple disk that's rated for drag and close to 1000 torque
The low price paid was being patient and finding this on eBay ,again literally bnib never ever mounted
