Default 1992 SC300 auto R-154 swap

I have a 1992 SC300 auto I am trying to find the exact specs i needs for the r154 swap. if I don't want to cut my trans tunnel what extension and shifter do i need. i have been looking around and cant get a straight answer. for example if i bought a new r154 from drift motion how would i order it with an extension and a straight shifter or mk3 style and bent shifter. since my car did not come manual the hole placement is not the same which means i cant use a soarer shift assembly. is this even possible without cutting trans tunnel. where would the tripod shift assembly place the shifter in the car?

If you don't want to cut your transmission tunnel.... then replace it with the correct one for SC/Soarer/MKIV "tripod" style transmissions: P/N 58261-14010 ($164 list, about $110 from McGeorge Toyota).

You would remove the front seats, center console and floor carpeting and then undo the spot welds and remove the seam sealer. Then you remove the original A/T top sheetmetal and replace it with the new tripod M/T sheetmetal. This is NOT the same as cutting your transmission tunnel. This is the best and most "perfect" method: replacing your trans tunnel's top sheetmetal with the correct OEM M/T tripod sheetmetal. You would give the fresh metal a quick flat top coat spray of paint in your car's chassis paint code (or whatever color you have painted it to).

It's a little work, yes but the result when finished would be exactly as if it had been manufactured that way.

Then you can bolt a new tripod R154 right in with a standard type tripod shifter.

An MKIII Supra R154 shifter which has the "swan neck" bend is not compatible with any tripod W58/R154/V160/V161. Those style shifters only work with the MKIII W58/R154, 1992-1994 SC300 W58 and 1991-1993 Soarer R154 (which are all "top-loader" style, some with enclosed extension housings).

You will need a standard style "tripod" style shifter if you will be using any tripod style transmission.

Using a tripod R154 you can plug the VSS sensor right in and you can use an OEM SC300/MKIV W58 transmission mount and SC300/MKIV W58 transmission crossmember.
