Just wondering what would be more prudent. I'm looking at buying an SC, found a nice 400 that i was gonna make manual, but I also found a 300 manual, but I really want the power of the 1uz v8.

What would be easiest/more cost effective? I know cheap and easy isn't something to expect on either, but does one have a benefit over the other?

I think you are one of the first people who think that the 1uz is powerful.
it you want power, then go with the sc300 and gte swap
sc400 makes a great cruiser.
sc300 makes a great drift/drag car

I assumed the V8 has more power than the straight six.... I drove both and that's what I (thought) I noticed. Please explain why I'm wrong, I seriously would like to know more. Thanks

It does, there's just not much of an aftermarket for it. If you want raw power and a stick, your best bet is the 300, if you want something different, there are more and more cases of 1uz's making big power on small budgets. The biggest budget breaker on the 400 would be the manual swap. For that you'll have to get an adapter kit which isn't cheap. If the 400 is in similar condition, but cheaper by at least 2k then it might get you a head start on modification money.

The 400 does have quite a bit of power in stock form, but the automatic makes it tough to tap into. I'm envious of the people who have done the manual swap.

Both 92. The 300 is in rough shape exterior wise, but a little cheaper. Not cheap enough for a paint job however (it's like half primered half messy scraped up crap) while the 400 is my favorite color (red).

I'm currently in tech school, and I want something to work on an have fun with....and a little originality doesn't hurt. Pretty much everyone here has either a civic/integra or a 350z (that their rich daddy's bought them). That's what kinda led me to the SC....I've always loved supras but they are impossible to find around here, let alone for something I can afford. I think having one of these to work in and have fun with will make me stand out a bit.

I have an sc400 and it sounds really nice, but it's slow as ***** and I want more power. Now I'm in the process of saving up for a 1jzgte. But if I were to do it all over again I would have bought a 300.

I would think a 5 speed 400 would be cheaper and more easily maintained than an NA-T 300. If you are good at that sort of thing it can be fun but the threads of guys trying to get an NA-T running properly sound like a highly technical foreign language to me. It's a beast not for the timid by any stretch. When the 400 manual swap is done right, it just works as expected with no hassle and the owners seem to love them and keep them. I personally am going that route.

NA-T done right is expensive as hell. Engine swaps done right is expensive as hell. Manual swaps are expensive as hell. I suggest buying the manual SC300, or just buy another car altogether like a later model 240sx.

The Sc300/400 are definitely more Unique than say a 240sx or civic. I would purchase the sc300 if I was looking for big power and the ease of tuneablity. The sc400 for a daily driver due to more power from factory.

If the 400 is in good condition, it would he worth picking up for the right price. Fair warning though, a manual swap costs about 3k for the 400. For the cost though, it will really wake up the car.

Either car with a manual will be fun but an SC300 that came with a manual will not only be faster out of the box but remove the big project that is swapping a W58 into the SC400 (plus the trans adapter hardware you'll need on top of the 5-speed transmission and all of the support hardware that goes with it).

Yes, the 400 with a W58 swap will be faster than a non-turbo SC300 5-speed but I'd venture a guess that you'll spend less money on the manual SC300 upfront.

Definitely the SC300 is easier to modify for horsepower if you live in a state that doesn't heavily scrutinize your emissions hardware and only cares about the tailpipe. Then again you do have fewer options available period to modify a 1UZ and an Eaton supercharger on top of the engine isn't exactly stealth.

I personally thought of picking up an SC400, swapping to a 5-speed, LSD and LS400 brakes and calling it a day but I ended up buying an SC 5-speed for the reasons stated above.

Everyone assumes you have one or are about to swap to one anyway. I don't think anyone since the dawn of time has ever asked if they were planning to swap their 2JZ for a 1UZ. Drink the koolaid.
