4spd auto to 5 spd
I know this has been asked and answered 100 times but I couldn't get the info I needed because it seems people do the swaps themselves and manuals to other manuals.....
I have a 93 auto with 193k
I am looking to make it a manual
First question is which transmission comes stock with the sc300 5spd?
would that be a good choice to throw in my car for a quick cheap conversion?
Is there a better 5spd I can put in that you would recommend
How much do the parts run? How much should the job cost to be done by a shop?
Does anyone know a shop in the NY-NJ-PA-CT area that does this on regular basis?
Any shop that sells and does swaps?
Also if i was to go to a full swap 1JZ or 2JZ?

The W58 is the stock 5 speed. I asked a tranny shop in my town about this swap. He said would cost about 5K and it would be a PITA. I know this swap happens but I decided not go that way. My two cents worth. Good luck.

W58
Is there a better 5spd I can put in that you would recommend
R154, Getrag 6 speed
How much do the parts run? How much should the job cost to be done by a shop?
How long is a piece of string? How much is a house? in other words, it depends, you must choose what you want, then shop around
Does anyone know a shop in the NY-NJ-PA-CT area that does this on regular basis?
No one I know in those states does it regularly
Any shop that sells and does swaps?
No, not that I know of
Also if i was to go to a full swap 1JZ or 2JZ?
Your choice, read the many comparison threads here. There are reasons to go both ways
"they talk about doing a 5spd to a different 5spd or to a 6spd"
Not true, most are auto to manual by far
All of the info you requested except the recommendations for shops are well covered on this site including many DIY and build threads. I can say this though, if you are adverse to heavily researching something on your own, you will NEVER make it through any of these swaps. There are many approaches and no one can make the choices for you. You have to read and read and read until you are familiar with all approaches, then make the choices that work for you from an informed position based on performance, reliability, difficulty, price and what parts you can get your hands on. I rarely see a shop that does these tranny swaps but a few do the motor swap.
There are some really brilliant members here, if you take the initial steps, they will help with the rest for sure.
Good luck man!

As for this nonsense about it costing $5,000+ for swap parts and install I highly doubt you'll spend that much unless your buy a trans with existing issues. However, if you buy a really nice high end clutch for your stock 2JZ-GE or swap motor that could cost a decent amount. You could also run the route of buying a nice 1 piece driveshaft. There's also the possibly of it needing a rebuild. All these factors come in to play with these swaps. I know this because I'm in the middle of one now.
ANOTHER TIP: Budget your money and decide EXACTLY what you want to do (I.E. Trans swap or motor and trans swap, etc) when you run into kinks during your build you will be glad you budgeted money in for those extra little hiccups.

no there's lots of threads about going auto to W58 which is the sc300, MKIV supra tranny depending on which type you get. every question you asked has been answered. sowwyy, other 5 speeds are R154 if you're looking to make more power, i've seen a video of a nissan tranny from an SR s14, there's the 6 speed form a 350z which is a great alternative to the supra getrag tranny (V160). parts are pretty expensive. go on toyotav8.com, they have almost all the parts you need. if you do it yourself you can pull it off with probably 1500k or so. best scenario is to find an SC300 for dirt cheap and you have almost everything you need besides an adapter plate, and some other parts.

^^ Very good advice above.
As many here have stated, xshurikx, you should look into threads that pertain to what parts each manual setup requires. Pedals and the clutch master cylinder are the same for all. In each case it's also ideal to get an appropriate manual transmission style ECU for your engine (i.e.: if you JUST have a stock 2JZ-GE and plan to keep it that way-- SC300 5-speed ECU. 2JZGTE swap? 6-speed manual TT ECU. 1JZGTE swap? Get the correct M/T ECU for whichever version 1JZ you have. NA-T or standalone engine build? It's your choice...)
A W58 does fine against a non-turbo 2JZ-GE or against a stock 1UZ-FE V8 (which requires an aftermarket kit)
People do run boost against the W58 (from an SC300 or a Supra MKIV, not from an MKIII Supra) but it's a gamble as to their longevity depending on driving style or condition. It wasn't specifically designed for boost.
The R154 works in all other cases but is more expensive and harder to find parts for. The 6-speed? Very, very, very expensive but it's the best of them.
There are also threads regarding the Nissan 350Z CD009 6-speed and Aisin AR-5 5-speed from the Pontiac Solstice. I don't recommend you consider those if you haven't done transmission swaps before because both are very new to the SC community and venture outside of easily reproducible results.
Good luck!

thanks guys, i appreciate the feedback. i will definetly not be doing the swap myself dont have the right equipment or space to do it. i will need to find a shop.
i will read some additional info about the 5spd r154 and the 6spd.
i was told if i go to a 6spd i will need to change the rear axel.
someone also told me about a spot in NJ that has all the parts shipped straight from japan engines and tranmitions that they just swap for yours, have to look into that.
i want to save money but at the same time not regret what i did, so maybe i should go big or go home!
i will look into all the pricing and budget for that plus additional issues i will run into.
if the tranny will cost me around 2 i will be happy if the engine and tranny are around 5 i will be also happy. just sucks i did the maintenance on my engine recently.

I believe i saw your build, and it seems you got a lot of new parts for it, so it looks pretty expensive.
I found a shop out in NJ that does these swaps for a living, all sorts and lexus is a big part. they can order if they dont have an engine straight from Japan, 1J or 2J.
I am leaning towards a 1J for the simple fact that I dont care if its 1 or twin turbo and i rather have the smaller displacement preferrably on a 6spd. If i can make that happen it would be like winning the lotto (sort of)
now i just need to price it out and see, since i cant do it myself i have to rely that they do a good job.

1jzgte is still twin turbo 2.5L vs 3.0L, both are good but if you need to pass emissions or anything like that a 2jzgte would be your best bet. and you cant call your local toyota dealer for 1j parts.
I was thinking about the 1j a lot but at the end you wish that 2jz was in. its worth just to keep saving for one. i been saving for a long time.
