Default Engine Health

I have been pondering the following facts & questions and I've decided it's time to 'ask the audience'....

The facts:
1. My '91 UZZ30 (JDM equivalent of the SC400) has 166k miles on the clock & is running fine.
2. The brakes/suspension will be sorted/upgraded within a month.
3. I want more performance & I know how I want to achieve it

The questions:
1. Does thinking about putting more power through an engine that old makes me crazy/incredibly stupid?
2. Is there any way, short of stripping the engine down, to perform a 'health check'?
3. What's the fastest verified 0-60 & 1/4 mile for a streetable SC400?
